So true for many School Principals and Teachers.

Still deeply reflecting on the experience of Alice Springs and the truly inspiring educators that Rikki Mawad and I met through our engagements with Robyn Thorpe and the NTPA and Joanne Alford of Centralian Senior College. We hear a lot about education in Alice, and the NT more broadly, what gets reported is a truth, but one of many. What we witnessed were dedicated people working within complex systems of government, education and all of the intersectionalities that come along for the ride, who had the students and the broader impacts of their education constantly centre of their worlds. People who would in any other job, role or universe not be expected to do what is assumed in their roles in terms of the broader care and agility needed to be a Principal or school leader, with the leanest of resources at times. These are humans who show up from their core, and know that sometimes the smallest, almost imperceptible shift in behaviour and belonging from a student is a seismic win for their education and future. The work we did in trauma-responsive schools, teams and cultures workshops were far from a training from a place of authority. It was a handing over of tools, information and perspectives to people who already came from a supremely innate base of knowing how to support the fragility of growing minds and identities. It felt like dropping off some fresh supplies to sustain throughout the term, knowing that they would be well utilised. For all those educators who keep showing up: we see you. We see the gross inequities, the struggle, but we mostly see your strength, your passion, your grit and your tenacity, your innovation and creativity, as you know, and we know, everyone of those kids is worth it. Thanks for letting us swim in your river.

In 2023, only 48% of California’s high school graduates met the criteria for admission into the state’s two public university systems, with traditionally underserved students seeing even higher levels of ineligibility, according to a recent EdSource report. EOS Superintendent-in-Residence Ryan Smith, an education leader in California for twenty years, has witnessed this issue first-hand – but sees a clear path to a brighter future for the state’s high school students. In his new article, Smith breaks down his solution to this persistent problem into a few key focus areas: Raising expectations and changing mindsets, eliminating barriers and increasing support for students, and engaging and empowering parents. Smith highlights EOS as one of the organizations helping schools cultivate inclusive and encouraging classroom environments, which allows students to reach new academic heights and equips them with the tools to thrive at the next level. Read more about Smith’s advice to education leaders below. #education #partnership #studentaccess #california #UC #CalState

Here is the list for all of you looking to attend college next year or for those of your parents that has a kiddo or two on the launchpad 🚀🎓🚀🙋♀️🙋♂️🙏 I guess there are at least three questions that come immediately to mind … 1) is an elite college the gateway to success it used to be? 2) With so many alternative educational opportunities available eg. OnlineEd, Skilled Trades, etc..are these schools worth the cost? And 3) Where am I going to find the money? 💰💰💰 Let’s face it while most of us would love our kids to attend one of these schools, the reality is, the cost of higher education in the US is #wayoutta hand… Makes you stop and think about the alternatives of just diving into one of these institutions Straight Outta high school. I know a lot of families that have chosen #communitycollege and/or #skilled trades as an alternative. In California, if you do well in your first two years at a CC, can generally get into any number of great schools 🤙 Anyway, food for thought 🤔🫶🧐 https://lnkd.in/eF9u3NSs

(These opinions are my own) I recently had the opportunity to participate in two impactful education conferences: Yes.Every.Kid’s Stronger Together Denver Cohort and ExcelinEd’s ESA Administrators Network in Minneapolis. These experiences caused me to reflect on school accountability within our education system, particularly in relation to market-based approaches. I find myself aligned with ExcelinEd’s CEO, @Patricia Levesque who borrowed a line from her friend 50CAN’s president Derrell Bradford by stating, “you regulate a monopoly different than a market.” Levesque points out that accountability assessments are crucial for traditional public schools due to their monopoly status, whereas market-driven education relies on parental choice as a robust accountability measure. (Regulating Public, Private Schools: Parental Choice Is The Key (excelined.org) I particularly value ExcelinEd’s A-F accountability framework for its clarity in assessing school performance, which is essential for both schools and families. (ExcelinEd.PolicyToolkit.AFSchoolGrading.ModelPolicy.2019.pdf) As I continue my residency at ExcelinEd, I look forward to exploring these nuances further and continuing my development as an education policy leader.
