In the face of a “massive attack on its credibility,” the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA is operating “hand-to-mouth, month-to-month” with resources to cover operations up to August. UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini’s bigger worry is what happens next year if the United States does not resume funding. Of the 16 donors that froze their support in January, all have resumed funding except for three: the United States, the United Kingdom, and Belgium. While the latter two have not been major funders of UNRWA, the United States was until last year the agency’s largest donor by far, providing USD 422 million, twice as much as Germany, the second largest donor. Looking ahead, Lazzarini is less worried about the last four or five months of the year because he believes it will be possible to mobilize the necessary support to bridge the gap for 2024. Well, you say "Kills off" but this needs context. Whje an election is called or even when a parliamentary session ends (ie usually every year), Parliamentary business' slate is wiped clean. Bills are not carried over unless specifically agreed by Parliament. Basically they need special action to carry it over. When Sunak called the election, Rwanda was over. Since parliamentvs slate clears. Starmer will choose his legislative agenda aligned to his manifesto and the King's Speech will seal the start of Parliament with that new agenda. What this means is Starmer didn't technically explicitly kill it off. He just refused to give ita defibrillator. Which is fine. Should go anyway. The question is how far will he go? To he honest, he has to undo all the damage the Tories did to everything in his first 100 days. He has to be aggressive and go further. Set in stone the inability to change inalienable rights. The "convention" of old boys handshakes by which the UK exists MUST END! It's how corruption is allowed to exist. It's how human and civil rights are allowed to be desecrated. We need a written, unwavering constitution that can never be repealed. Ever! Democracy needs severe penalties for subversion. Only trounced by that of human rights. We need Parliament to defer to expertise and take itself out of science. Giving full, unfettered decision making powers to science (there's the promise of that with Valance as a surprise choice as junior minister for Science) and nobody should ever have a job as mini stern for portfolio without a masters degree in the subject they're responsible for. This is an opportunity for change, but equally it needs to think about the medium term. The UK is going into it's eye if the storm between the two far-right government. The USA will enter the end of theirs in November, with the worse periods of far-right sandwiches being the second (historically), Starmer needs to guard the UK against the US' WW3 pin-pull. Economically and militarily. As NATO will be dragged into an offensive war of the US-Israeli alliance's making. The expectation will be of support and sanctions will follow for NATO members if not. This is despite Trump wanting to end NATO altogether. Don't count chickens.

I had an opportunity last week for World Refugee Day to interview with BBC News around family Reunification. As someone who has experienced family separation, I know all too well what that is like. How many more years will refugee families have to wait to be together again? Some may never see their loved ones again. We need the Administration to: -Alleviate the existing backlogs of individual cases, so families can quickly be reunited. -Expand the Parole Porgram to be global. -Scale up and invest in community sponsorship. -And reverse course on the recent Exective Order (212F) on people seeking asylum - as it is creating more family separation. It is a valid and legal pathway for people to seek asylum. Resettlement and Asylum save lives & we need to continue to expand it.

I'm thrilled to celebrate five years at HIAS! It's been an incredible journey working alongside dedicated colleagues and making a tangible impact on the lives of people worldwide. Here are some highlights from the past half-decade: - Crisis Response: Mobilized effective responses to the fall of Kabul, the war in Ukraine, and the Israel-Hamas conflict. We raised upwards of $1 million for humanitarian aid and facilitated the formation of 34 local private sponsorship groups to welcome over 100 individual refugees in California. - Policy Wins: Successfully advocated for policy and funding wins for HIAS' four California resettlement affiliates through strategic partnerships with organizations like Jewish Public Affairs Committee of California (JPAC) and the CHIRLA-led CA Welcomes Coalition. This resulted in securing $8 million over three years for asylee case management, putting up strong fronts to secure state support for asylum shelter programs at the border. - Partnership Expansion: Grew HIAS' reach by recruiting JFCS of Long Beach/West Orange County to become our newest California resettlement partner to earn U.S. Department of State approval to welcome newcomers. - Advocacy and Education: Designed and implemented numerous advocacy and educational programs to empower individuals to take action on behalf of refugees. These initiatives have had a profound impact on raising awareness and fostering support for our cause. While reflecting on our achievements, it's clear that the refugees, asylum seekers, and other forcibly displaced people are increasingly politicized worldwide, making our work more crucial than ever. I saw this child when I was taking part in camp-level outreach programmes. Many children around the world are without hope and are either living in camps, as refugees, or as internally displaced people (IDPs). Let's ensure that they have hope in life. Make children happy everywhere. Not even those living in refugee camps are left behind. Children living in temporary camps are frequently denied the opportunity to develop and realise their full potential; nonetheless, their worth is contingent upon their ability to demonstrate to the outside world their innate abilities through a variety of pursuits. The world of tomorrow will be led by today's kids. Who can say where they originated? The children of today will return to us a world we wish for and will develop something, especially for the benefit of future generations, if international diplomacy and the political realm can secure safe spaces for them. It is our current responsibility to provide them with the environments they need to grow and yield positive outcomes for the world in which we all aspire to live. Prominent politicians, the UN, and humanitarians must act quickly to provide them permission.
