🌍 Do you remember how excited you were to go on your first ‘all expenses paid’ overseas business trip? ⚓ This was mine in 1986. I had recently joined my first ship, HMS Jupiter, a Leander Class frigate, as a 19-year-old engineering apprentice, escorting the Tall Ships Race from Newcastle, England to Bremerhaven, West Germany in the final years of the Cold War. ⚓ The tall ship is the Russian Navy training ship STS Sedov. Built in Germany in 1921 as a cargo ship and transferred to the Soviet Navy after WW2 as part of war reparations, and later converted for naval cadet training - a role she still has today. ⚓ I particularly like this photo as it’s a reminder of how transient our careers are and how the world constantly changes around us – and the small incremental changes we make every day by acquiring new skills, experiences and relationships over time often go unnoticed until you look back to where you started from. ⚓ But like the century old hull of the STS Sudov, it’s only possible to build a varied and successful career if the foundations and fundamentals (or your beliefs and values) are sound to start with. ⚓ The photo also reminds me of how my first job, shaped my beliefs and values – and these have stayed with me long after leaving the military: ✅ If you say you’re going to do something, you do it on time and to the best of your ability.  ✅ Giving up isn’t an option. Even if you’re not immediately sure how to solve a problem, you can still be relied on to work it out. ✅ Team and loyalty is everything. Every person has a role to play and if you don’t play yours, the whole team fails. 🔱 What was your first job? And did it shape you in a way that helped you throughout your career?

This quote has been with me a lot lately, it is a great reminder that a job worth doing is a job done right, and that applies to all aspects of life be it in your career, with your family and friends or most importantly of all with yourself. The origin of this quote is though to have originated from the Navy SEALs emphasizing the importance of accuracy and consistency under a controlled pace to achieve excellence.

I've got 300 days before I leave the Royal Navy; Let's chat about realising your personal value ⚓ The first 65 days flew by quick! With just 300 days left in uniform, and it's got me thinking about something important: personal value. You know, the stuff you've "civilianised" onto a MS Word document when you're learning to actually adult and making your CV. Creating that piece of A4 has been a journey to say the least – realising the awesome things I've done, the skills I've picked up, and the unique viewpoint I bring to the table. But the most important thing I've discovered is; personal value is more than just the usual CV spiel. It's about your tenacity and the effort you put into everything but also the cost you put onto your lifetime. Trying to articulate that as a Service Leaver is incredibly difficult: Transforming your mindset from "I'm a Level X Lieutenant" to "I think my worth sits in the salary range of 'X to X'" is so unnatural to us. As I gear up for what's next, I'm beyond excited to take the skills from my Naval career and dive into new adventures. Here's to the next 300 days of figuring it all out and embracing the new horizon!

Yes to all of it! Those who accept the responsible to lead others need to do so not merely to advance their career. It is honor and a privilege to mentor, teach, responsibly delegate, provide constructive feedback and let others shine. Some seek great joy in this path. For others, they love and excel at “doing the work”. I have great appreciation for those who are self-aware enough to make that choice. Companies need both to thrive and more importantly, mature adults who are introspective and confident enough to communicate their chosen path.
