Expanding university access in the UK has not yielded the anticipated benefits. ❌ Instead, it's shifted the focus away from those who look for alternative paths. ❌ Meanwhile, insufficient efforts have been directed towards enhancing the competencies of individuals at the lower end - including both adults and young people. ❌ There's a deficiency in fundamental literacy, numeracy, and employability skills, which means that prospects remain very constrained. ❌ So it's great to hear about what BAFTA are doing to promote social mobility in the arts and creative sectors - both of which are close to my heart. 😍 BAFTA's commitment to empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds and helping them to reach their full potential is excellent. They have committed to addressing class inequality and renewed their focus in response to the demanding landscape faced by many industry professionals today as well as those aspiring to enter the world of film or television without pre-existing connections or financial assistance. How can youth workers support young people while delivering policy? What make a 'positive activity' positive? When is an 'informed choice' truly informed? Why is politics in education discourages? How can we make sense of all of this? Writing from a tradition of information and radical dissent, Belton askes those working with young people to reassess their role and motivation and, on the basis of the radical tradition of youth work, critique the imposed forms of 'protection' (surveillance) 'welfare' (child care) 'management (administrative fire-fighting) and pretty much formalised (didactic) instruction/advice giving. This book has been written to promote challenge and argument in the face of the increasing conformity, homogeneity and predictability with youth work theory. Belton addresses topics that are ripe for review in this inspiring collection of interrelated discussions, which offers: a foundation of workers, leaders and students to engage in positive analysis of the sift in government focus from individual and groups of young people - and their personal and collective perspectives - to national, functional, economic requirements ways of putting into perspective this move away from seeing the strength of young people as their relatively unmediated potential to be a fresh and vibrant natural resource to reinvigorate society a launching pad for practitioners to consider how to use their professional judgement to alter perception and routines of service in ways that challenge traditions; but without condemning other academics, thinkers or youth workers Tania do St Croix's consideration of a foundation literature of radical you work, and how new theories could be engendered Zuber Ahmed's concluding chapter that encourages youth workers to: > constantly question their own actions and interventions > help young people - through questioning - to forsake ready-made ideas and products and reawaken their own - and our - imaginations, sense of wonder, and faith in dynamic possibilities The goal is to engender as self- reinforcing cycle, whereby radical theory is enlivened via practice, the critique of which provides the basis and provocation of professional judgement (development or even the rejection of convention) which is the conduit of radical theory (that tested in practice evokes further critique). Not a formal academic book, it uses logical deconstruction of current paradigms, personal narrative, life story and metaphor as the means for the reader to begin to take a look at the fundamentals of youth work practice and question its taken-for-granted notions. It will enable youth workers to think clearly about the social function and/or political purpose of 'education' in a time when many feel 'community education' to be their role.

Wales new curriculum in schools has been a hot topic and if it hasn’t hit your inbox maybe have a gander 👀 It’s game changing in the sense of merging the academic sector with youth work, life skills and all inbetween I’m a parent ~ to a child that will undertake learning through decisions made now, so my approach is both professional and personal. But in the same breath something unique is changing in wales. What’s the main outcome everyone is seeking ~ young people leaving the education system with the skills and knowledge to succeed in whichever career they choose. A chance for everyone to have an opportunity. Side note for anyone who doesn’t know. LinkedIn is big on seeing professional journeys develop. Samuel Robinson and I began a key role in our careers as executives (youth development leads) and have progressed into roles within our separate organisations as managers to create real change in wales. We have the absolute privilege with the support of our own organisations, Emma Chivers SFHEA/FRSA and The Council for Voluntary organisations in wales to be heard. The decisions made carve a new journey for the generation that follows us. We’re all a stepping stone in the story and pass the baton on. One thing I’ve realised more than ever this month. Is change comes from those with the passion to drive it and those generations that will pick up and change it after us. But the goal remains ~ what can we all do to change the future of those that follow us. Addressing the attainment gap is crucial to support social inclusion

Education entails acquiring knowledge to have a greater understanding of the various disciplines that will be used in our everyday lives. ‘Education’ refers to the information we gain and experience outside of books or classrooms, as well as the knowledge that we receive and experience in schools, our homes, and as members of society. Our ideas on life alter as a result of learning, education is crucial for personal development and growth in society. In this blog, we will see why we need education for growth and will also look at some articles on the importance of education. The value of education at a much younger age. Our first tryst with learning begins at home, and our first teachers are our parents, grandparents, and often siblings. The importance of education lies in its continuity, learning is a lifetime process that will stop with our death. It is the foundation for the development of a healthy individual and society. Our world cannot have a bright future if our culture lacks education. Education is the key to change. It is an important tool that allows a person to understand his or her rights and responsibilities to his or her family, society, and nation. It improves a person’s ability to view the world and to fight against misdoings such as injustice, corruption, and violence, among other things. Stability Education’s importance in our lives provides us with stability in our everyday lives. Everything may be split, but not your education, you must be told. You can improve your chances of getting a better job with the aid of your degree and expertise. Financial Security Our financial stability is helped by education. Higher-qualified individuals receive higher-paying employment in this era, allowing them to guarantee their future. Self-dependency Education teaches us to be self-sufficient in our daily lives. A person’s education is his alone, and with it, he may feel safe and self-sufficient. Equality Equality is a right that everyone deserves. If everyone had the opportunity to pursue higher education, there would be a greater likelihood that everyone would earn a large sum of money, and there would be fewer disparities across social classes. It aids in the pursuit of equality. Confidence Confidence is one of the finest aspects of success. Education boosts a person’s self-assurance. You can go further into a topic that you are already familiar with. I have noticed a trend in youth work. All of these “youth partners” and “youth focused organisations” restrict their mandates exclusively to inspiring youth to make change but rarely focus on supporting youth in changemaking. We always aim to inspire and not support. By support I dont mean “technical support” or a “letterhead” to back up your work. I mean financial support. Youth work is important yet we never finance it. We do not create specific line items to finance youth led and focused projects. How can we be serious about youth work if all we do is inspire and then never help implement. Maybe we need to revise our approach to youth engagement.
