Does weight regain predict success in combat-sports? 🥊 Many combat sports athletes cut significant amounts of weight before fighting to weigh-in, then regain significant amounts of weight to gain a competitive advantage over their opponents on fight night 🥵 But does this actually impact competitive success? 🤔 This study investigated weight cut practices and fight outcomes in 2100 professional combat sports athletes (MMA + Boxing)🥋 Results: In MMA, winners regained significantly more body mass than losers (8.7 vs 7.9%) and each percentage bodyweight ⬆️ resulted in a 7% increase in likelihood of victory. In Boxing, winners also regained significantly more bodyweight than losers (8.0 vs 6.9%) and each percentage bodyweight ⬆️ resulted in a 13% increase in likelihood of victory. At one time Toronto was arguably the hottest MMA market in the world outside of Las Vegas. Demand for the product was so strong, stoked by the non-legalisation of MMA in the province of Ontario, that its potency was finally unleashed when the first Ultimate Fighting Championship PPV event here - UFC 129 - post-legalisation drew an astounding 55,000 to Rogers Centre on April 30, 2011. UFC followed this success opening a UFC Canada office in Toronto to commercialise the burgeoning market, and subsequently staging events in Montreal, Vancouver and other Canadian markets. Then, events in Toronto failed to sell out, with the last event here in 2018, and the lustre seemingly wore off. Other Canadian markets staged events in 2019, but the pandemic and UFC's desire to penetrate new international markets has led to a nearly 5-year absence from Canada...until last night. UFC finally returned to Toronto yesterday for the first time since 2018 with 𝙐𝙁𝘾 297 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙫𝙨 𝘿𝙪 𝙋𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙨. It was a sellout at 18,100 and had a gate of CAD$7.2M, the largest since the famed UFC 129. What kind of market is Toronto for UFC? Former UFC fighter from Brazil to appraise fighters from Mariupol This decision was made at his meeting with athletes at the Dmitry Donskoy MMA school, the biggest one in Donbass DONETSK, August 2/ Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter, the founder and owner of the Bodao team Francimar Barroso from Brazil has told TASS that he will take part in the appraisal of young MMA fighters in Mariupol. This decision was made at his meeting with athletes at the Dmitry Donskoy MMA school, the biggest one in Donbass. "I come here today for Mariupol, for Donetsk for teaching a classic way, to show my sport because sport puts everybody more close," he said, adding that he agreed with President of the Mariupol MMA Federation Vladislav Myasnikov to sign a contract for belt awarding. According to Myasnikov, Barroso will appraise jiu-jitsu fighters not only from among trainees but also from among coaches. "It is very interesting for us, even coaches, to learn something from a fighter of such a level," he said, adding that the document will be signed soon. Francimar Barroso, 44, aka "Bodao," had 33 fights in his professional MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) career. He won 27 of them (12 KOs, five submissions and nine decisions) and had seven defeats (three by KO, one by submission and three by decision). #business #finance #financialservices
