I worked in a call centre for 2 years before I stepped into a Courtroom. Not many people know that immediately after graduating, I was a charity fundraiser in North London with an LLB and an LLM 👩🏾🎓 I was a girl with two law degrees who would spend her lunch breaks reading and her evenings applying for law jobs. I’d get a few rejection emails and had many (so so many) ignored applications. But I kept going - and kept smiling. I learnt to leverage my unrelated roles for my future career. I’d come into work, get on the phones and treated each caller like my very own client. Listening to what they had to say. Understanding their concerns. Advising on what possible options could be. Here’s what I was learning: 1️⃣ I had to embrace the diversity of my experience: No experience is the same and not many paths are linear. Working in a call centre, working in the local Co-Op, volunteering for local charities, it all comes into it. Diverse experiences are not useless - they shape the journey. 2️⃣ I had to showcase my transferable skills: advocacy, attention to detail, creative problem solving, active listening - all skills I developed before I got to Court and still skills I use today in my legal work. 3️⃣ I had to turn my setbacks into my stepping stones: This was and still is essential for my growth. Learning that rejection does not need to be internalised. Each call, each caller and every conversation was building my character and my resilience. If you are currently in a role that doesn’t look or feel relevant to where you want to be, don’t lose heart. You are more than your current job role. Nothing is wasted. Your persistence will pay off ✨ #Law #LawyerLife #LLB #LLM #SQE #Solicitor #Barrister #FutureLawyers

Understanding IOLTA: Supporting Access to Justice for Low-Income Individuals IOLTA, or Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts, plays a vital role in expanding access to justice for low-income individuals across the country. Here's a closer look at how IOLTA programs work and their impact on communities: What is IOLTA? IOLTA programs allow lawyers to pool funds from client trust accounts that are nominal in amount or held for a short period. The interest generated on these pooled funds is then used to provide grants to organizations offering legal assistance to low-income individuals who cannot afford representation. Mandatory Participation Participation in IOLTA programs is mandatory for lawyers handling client funds in many jurisdictions. Lawyers are required to deposit client funds that are nominal or short-term into interest-bearing IOLTA accounts. Supporting Access to Justice By channeling interest from IOLTA accounts into grants for nonprofit legal service providers, IOLTA programs directly support organizations that offer critical legal assistance to low-income individuals and underserved communities. Ethical Responsibilities Lawyers have a duty to handle client funds with diligence and care, including compliance with IOLTA rules and regulations. Adhering to these ethical responsibilities ensures the proper handling of client funds and supports the mission of the IOLTA program. Get Involved As legal professionals, we have a unique opportunity to support access to justice through participation in IOLTA programs. Whether it's ensuring compliance with IOLTA rules or advocating for the expansion of funding for legal aid organizations, our actions can make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. Let's continue to champion the mission of IOLTA and work together to promote equal access to justice for all members of our communities. #IOLTA #AccessToJustice #LegalAid #LegalProfession #CommunityService #SocialImpact 💼🌟 Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences with IOLTA in the comments!

Memphis [Shelby Co., TN] Nonprofit, ACLU Sue Over State Bail Law Memphis nonprofit Just City, along with the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, has sued officials in Shelby County's criminal justice system over a state law that prevents judges from considering a defendant’s financial condition when setting bail. The groups allege that the new law, enacted in May, unconstitutionally subjects arrestees to "discriminatory wealth-based detention" in violation of due process and equal protection guarantees. The filing argues that not considering someone’s ability to pay bail will result in widespread pretrial detention of people who do not need to be detained for the safety of the community. Prior to enactment of the law, Shelby County officials required judges to use an "ability-to-pay calculator" to determine affordable bail. The suit, filed in federal district court, seeks an injunction to block the law, effectively reinstating the previous practice, the Commercial Appeal reports. Read more and access the filing from the ACLU. https://lnkd.in/e4CUZEJ2

Fresh Start for Pennsylvanians: Clean Slate Law Expands! 😁 Great news, Pennsylvania! Starting today, a non-violent drug felony conviction won't hold you back anymore. This update to the Clean Slate law automatically expunges these records for those who've been clean for 10 years, opening doors to jobs and a brighter future. "A person shouldn't be defined by their worst day," says Rep. Jordan Harris, who championed the Clean Slate legislation. This is a huge step towards giving people a second chance. Remember, many low-level drug offenses were felonies in PA. If that's you, and you've stayed crime-free for a decade, your record could be sealed automatically. #CleanSlatePA #SecondChances #CriminalJusticeReform Second Chances for Reintegration 🌻 Criminal records make it hard to rejoin society. Senator Camera Bartolotta stressed the importance of a path back for those who've paid their debt. "Why do people re-offend? They lack good jobs, housing, and education," said Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-88), a bill supporter. "Clean Slate directly addresses these issues." Boosting the Workforce 👷♂️ This legislation is backed by business groups like the PA Chamber of Business & Industry, who want to expand the workforce. With 66 workers for every 100 jobs in PA, Rep. Delozier highlighted a national issue: "Up to $87 billion is lost annually due to unemployment tied to criminal records." Impact and Information 🤝 Pennsylvania's Clean Slate law, the first in the nation for automatic expungement, passed in 2018. Since then, 11 states have followed suit. In states without Clean Slate, expungement or pardons are expensive and complex, leaving many without legal aid. Automatic Expungement: How it Works 🎊 The state sends a list of qualified candidates to involved agencies for confirmation and record sealing. "Lives have been changed," said Rep. Harris. What if my record is sealed? ⁉ The state doesn't notify individuals. Visit mycleanslatepa.com to see if you qualify. The website offers guidance on what to say to potential employers about a sealed record. Over 1.2 Million Records Expunged 😅 Pennsylvania has over 3 million people with criminal records. Since 2018, over 1.2 million have benefited from expungement. Please click this link to view the full article https://lnkd.in/euNZYGKb

It is with mixed feelings that we received news of the legal services funding commitment made by the Federal Government on Friday. The $3.9 billion that was announced as part of the National Access to Justice Partnership, the main source of financial support for Australia’s community legal sector, represents an $800-million uplift on the previous five-year agreement. However, this "package" is misleading in that it is to be allocated across four distinct types of legal services. All parts of this sector have deep scars from decades of chronic underfunding, and none will be adequately remedied by this band-aid injection. Social security is one area that is in urgent need of individual care. Social security is recognised as a fundamental human right because it acts as a buffer against so many different types of crises, from alleviating poverty and homelessness, to supporting youth justice and social inclusion, to assisting victim-survivors of domestic violence. Everyone has the right to an adequate safety net, and without specialist funding for social security legal services, the sizeable holes in this safety net will remain unpatched. Robodebt and the subsequent Royal Commission should be a wake-up call to Government about how serious the problem is, and how profoundly social security issues can impact individuals and communities. It should also be a wake-up call to the essential social justice role played by social security legal services. If the Government is serious about its duty to listen to the recommendations made by the Robodebt Royal Commission, they should listen to calls for an additional, specialist funding stream for social security legal centres of $5 million per year for the duration of the next funding agreement. Economic Justice Australia nails it! "Total system failure" is where Welfare Rights Centre is headed if we don't get the funding we need to meet the demand. Yes, we do incredible work – we change lives, equip the community sector with expertise in social security law, and advise the government on much-needed reforms. But we’re on the brink. Our intake system is groaning under the weight of demand. Families are surviving on just one Centrelink payment. Imagine trying to live on $500 a week for a family of eight. We have the knowledge to help them access their full entitlements, but we simply don’t have the resources. This is unconscionable. Things cannot go on like this.
