Higher education Higher education, also called tertiary education, is essentially the stage of formal learning that follows secondary education (high school). It's where you can earn academic degrees like bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and Ph.D.s. Here's a breakdown of higher education: Institutions: Universities, colleges, and polytechnics are the main institutions offering higher education. There are also professional schools for law, medicine, business, etc. Programs: These are structured learning pathways that lead to a specific degree or diploma. There are programs in a vast range of fields, from engineering and literature to music and healthcare. Benefits: Higher education can equip you with specialized skills and knowledge for your desired career. It can also enhance critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving abilities. Earning a degree can open doors to better job opportunities and higher salaries. #talentserve #internship

Coach and facilitator for research environments- helping research leaders thrive, keep joy in research and create empowering research culture.
Letting others experience the world of research- Cristina shared that as an undergraduate on a European exchange in Manchester, she had the opportunity to work alongside a Postdoc as a volunteer. While opportunities exist for funded research internships, they may not give students equal chances to experience the research environment. Unfunded research internships have always existed, but some institutions may now prevent some of these opportunities to avoid exploiting students. While this is all good in principle, it could limit the chance for some students to experience the world of research. In the interest of diversifying the workforce, I firmly believe that providing opportunities for students from minorities to experience the world of research should be part of the positive actions institutions take. Unpaid summer internships are rarely an option for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, so offering dedicated funding to create these opportunities is essential in shifting the balance of those who apply for PhDs. For researchers - taking an undergraduate student under your wing during the summer may feel like a time commitment you do not have. This is fair enough! This opens the door to others, particularly those less likely to access these opportunities easily. We have all been helped by someone along the way. Who is it that you could invite to discover the world of research? 🌎 Is there a scheme in your institution to help you supervise an undergraduate student who is interested in exploring further what research is really like? 🌎 Could you see your contribution to opening the doors to research to a student from a minority/ disadvantaged background as your way of contributing to the EDI agenda in the research environment? 🌎 Suppose you encounter a talented student who does not “see themselves” in the research environment. Can you take it upon yourself to get them to experience research firsthand so that they can discover this for themselves? https://lnkd.in/eFuupTzw #researchworld #whoentersresearchcareer #stemcellscientist #canadastemcellresearchnetwork

HDR UK Launches Review of Black Internship Programme Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) has initiated a comprehensive independent review of its Black Internship Programme, aimed at evaluating its impact on diversifying the health data science sector. Started in 2021, the programme has offered eight-week paid internships to Black students and recent graduates in STEM subjects, with placements in various institutions including the NHS. Its aim? To nurture fresh talent and increase the diversity in this field. To date, 315 participants have either completed or are midway through the programme. Now, HDR UK plans an independent 'health check' of the BIP. The goal is to assess whether the programme has reached its intended outcomes, such as enhancing participants' interest in health data careers and influencing broader sector diversity. This will include a review of the programme's design, its effectiveness and its impact on HDR UK and the health data science sector. This review comes at a time when diversity in STEM fields is increasingly under scrutiny, with critics citing the lack of representation for minority groups. HDR UK's efforts to address the issue through the BIP are commendable, and this review will provide valuable, data-driven insights into its effectiveness. HDR UK suggests the evaluators use the Context, Input, Process, Product (CIPP) framework - a popular model in education programme reviews. However, they're also open to other suggestions. The review will likely involve a mixed method approach with the evaluation of documents, data collection and analysis, and comparisons with similar programmes. The outcome, expected to include an evaluation report and a manuscript for publication, will also guide future iterations of the programme. The project will offer valuable insights not only into the programme's effectiveness but also into the ongoing efforts to improve inclusivity in a field that is crucial to public health. Industry observers note that such reviews are crucial for refining internship programmes to ensure they meet their diversity targets and provide real-world benefits to participants. While the review might seem like just another bureaucratic step, it's crucial for stirring the pot of diversity in the health data kettle. After all, everyone benefits when the cooks in the kitchen come from all walks of life! 📈 What impact might the review’s findings have on future diversity initiatives in the STEM fields? 💡 Are the HDR UK's efforts making a real impact on diversifying the STEM field? #BlackInternshipProgramme #HealthDataScience #PublicProcurement #Tender For more information on this tender, please click: https://lnkd.in/giWjTurx

Meet Nicole Palacios, a pre-med Health Science major at the University of Miami! She is one of the students who performed a Virtual Research Internship project at Universidad Austral, Buenos Aires. This is her testimony: “I applied for a HUC internship over the summer and was matched with Professor Victoria Bein for the topic of parenting stress. We discussed and analyzed various measures of parenting stress, and how child behavior affected these stress levels. My favorite part of this project was how I was able to work in both English and Spanish with students across different countries to translate stress measures. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and recommend it to anyone looking for a valuable research experience. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions! Virtual research internships are an excellent opportunity to foster scientific collaboration and international academic experiences. The Hemispheric University Consortium (HUC) provides an ideal platform to connect professors, researchers, and students from HUC universities across the continent. 🌟 Pioneering Change: My Internship at Central Michigan University🌟 Dear LinkedIn community, I am thrilled to share that I am embarking on a groundbreaking journey as a Research Intern within the Student Affairs department at Central Michigan University. Under the esteemed guidance of Dr. Renee Watson, Vice President of Student Affairs, and in collaboration with the visionary Prof. Mary Kushion from the Public Health Department, I am stepping into uncharted territory. 🔍 Our Mission: A Holistic Approach My internship revolves around empowering students holistically, with a focus on three critical areas: 1. Navigating Healthcare Systems:As part of the Student Disability Services and Mental Health Units, I will create resources to empower students—especially our international peers—to navigate complex healthcare systems. Whether it's understanding insurance policies, finding local clinics, or accessing mental health services, our mission is to ensure that no student feels lost or overwhelmed. 2. Mental and Physical Well-Being: College life can be exhilarating yet challenging. My research will explore strategies to enhance students' mental and physical health. From stress management techniques to fostering a supportive campus environment, we aim to nurture resilient individuals. 3. Breaking the Silence: Stigma often silences those who need support the most. Our data-driven research will shed light on students silently grappling with disabilities. By understanding their experiences, we can advocate for change, reduce stigma, and create a more inclusive campus. 🌟 Why This Matters This internship is the first of its kind at Central Michigan University. Education is more than just academics; it’s about nurturing the whole person. As I embark on this internship, I am fueled by the belief that every student deserves a supportive and inclusive environment. We're pioneering a path toward better student support, bridging gaps, and fostering an environment where every student thrives. Join me on this transformative journey! Let's amplify awareness, challenge norms, and create a campus community that uplifts everyone. Thank you, Dr. Watson and Prof. Kushion, for believing in this vision. And thank you, Central Michigan University, for fostering innovation and compassion. Stay tuned—I'll be sharing updates as we break new ground. 🌟📚🌱 #CMUInternship #StudentAffairs #ResearchMatters #InclusionChampion #StudentWellness Central Michigan University
