The taller the structure, the broader the base. Likewise, the higher the rank, the broader one's awareness must be. I had to build a wide foundation of broader knowledge than just my role before I could add value at higher levels. Once I did, I accelerated up the ranks. Attempting to influence while being naive doesn't work too well. Looking to rank up?
