Today I was given the opportunity to listen and learn from one of Nursing's greatest thought leaders - Dr. Jean Watson. Every #nurse learns about her theory of human caring in nursing school! She spoke to Nursing PhD and DNP students from Texas Woman's University about healthcare today and how the 10 Caritas processes can be incorporated in nurse's profession and discipline. The ANA beautifully interwove the principles in the most up to date definition of Nursing. Below are some key takeaways from today’s presentation: 1. Compassion for oneself is the foundation from which we can have compassion for others. As such, #transforminghealthcare is essential to create space for nurses to care for themselves and develop environments of healing. 2. If we focus on the problems, the problems will only get bigger! But if we pivot and focus on solutions, creative opportunities will abound! I could not help but get SUPER excited as this is at the heart of #innovation. 3. The heart and science of #Nursingcare honors human dignity. Recognizing individuals want to thrive (not just live!) must become essential to our clinical decision making. The meaning a person associates with their health (instead of a diagnosis alone) provides opportunity to live life more richly and nurses advocate for this! 4. How can #augmentedintelligence interweave the caritas principles into all aspects of planning for a healing environment, from the individual person to the health system level? Loved that this was brought up as it is an amazing, forward thinking perspective. #nursesonlinkedin

👏 Shoutout to Alex (The Break Nurse) Whitefield, MSN, RN! 👏 In the realm of #nursing, where outdated practices persist, Alex is a beacon of innovation. His groundbreaking software tackles a pervasive issue—#nurse breaks. Here's why it matters: When a #nurse assumes care of patients and takes on additional assignments during another #nurses break this is not just a workflow challenge; it's a risk to #patientsafety and legal liability to the nurse and the organization. As stated by a lawyer: "Knowingly and willing taking on an unsafe assignment is the definition of medical malpractice." I've witnessed firsthand how taking on an unsafe assignment even when relieving another nurse for a break compromises response times and exposes both nurses and facilities to potential failures to respond - aka bad outcomes and litigation. Under rules and regulations and codes of ethics, it's the duty and responsibility of all nurses to provide a safe environment for all patients and I am here to remind all #nurses that nothing supersedes the professional license of a provider ever! What Alex has created is revolutionary! It's not just about providing breaks; it's about ensuring continuity of care and mitigating risks - a gift to any organization. When there's a relief #nurse, work continues seamlessly, preventing delays and potential legal repercussions to the nurse and the organization. As a nurse with 23 years of critical care experience and former investigator for a board as well as a civil and administrative expert, I've seen the consequences of inadequate staffing and lack of breaks cost patients their lives and nurses their licenses. Alex's solution isn't just a win for nurses—it's a win for organizations. It saves thousands of dollars in legal fees and fines from governing bodies, improves #nurse satisfaction and retention, and, most importantly, enhances #patientcare and safety. Another HUGE thanks to Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL for connecting us, I love meeting trailblazing nurses. I'm thrilled to connect with Alex at #vive2024! #nurses are taking the helm, advocating for change, and making a real impact on healthcare outcomes and I am proud to stand amongst them. In 2021, leading nursing organizations, including the NLN, launched the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing to focus on its impact on nurses, patients, communities, and health care systems. As part of its work, the Commission invited two scholars — Dr. Dominique Tobbell of the University of Virginia and Dr. Patricia D’Antonio of the University of Pennsylvania — to prepare "The History of Racism in Nursing: A Review of Existing Scholarship," which delves deep into issues of structural and systemic racism. The report provides the context needed to understand the broad inequities that undergird the American health care system and lead to distrust among broad swathes of our population. It is designed to help nurses and nurse educators respond to those who do not want this history to live in the light. I know my mother and grandmother, who were both nurses, were watching from above. Chamberlain University asked me to speak about what I've learned in my unusual nursing career for the nursing graduates. I spoke about four key lessons I've learned. I. If you want a career that exceeds your dreams, set a long-term aspiration. It will propel you forward. II. If you want a career that exceeds your dreams, be open to side streets they might take you even further than that main path you were imagining. III. If you want a career that exceeds your dreams, it is mandatory to take good care of yourself.  IV.
