🎉 What a wonderful day at Loyola University Chicago's Summit: Bridging Healthcare Equity and Sustainability 🏥 🌎 Yesterday's Loyola University Chicago's summit, in collaboration with MATTER, highlighted the core theme of interlinking environmental justice and health equity within the U.S. healthcare system. As the Manager of STEM Experiences at Illinois Science and Technology Coalition, focused on preparing students for future workforce challenges, this theme resonates strongly. This event united national thought leaders and healthcare innovators to address the healthcare system's environmental impact and its consequences for health equity. It emphasized the urgency of addressing issues like waste and pollution, which contribute to climate change and exacerbate health disparities, and the need to institutionalize environmental justice. The summit called for collaboration among stakeholders from health systems, education, government, and entrepreneurship to find sustainable solutions. It underscored the importance of equipping students to face the challenges of healthcare and sustainability. The keynote address from Dr. Jalonne L. White-Newsome, federal chief environmental justice officer of the White House Council on Environmental Quality provided valuable insights into the intersection of environmental justice and health equity. This event showcased the critical work in progress to tackle these complex issues, aligning with ISTC's mission of preparing students for a future where these intertwined challenges will be pivotal. Congrats to Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health, Loyola University Chicago and MATTER on throwing an amazing event.

We are reaching out to you to invite you to submit abstracts for the 23rd Annual Health & Human Rights Conference!  We are now accepting abstracts on research related to the theme of Sustainable Systems: Health and the Environment. This theme involves research surrounding the following topics: -How does the environment impact health outcomes?  -What role does the shared environment of humans, animals, and plants play? -How can we improve human health through promoting healthy environments? -What is the relationship between human rights, health, and sustainable systems? -How can the healthcare system be more environmentally friendly/sustainable?   The 23rd Annual Health & Human Rights Conference will take place on March 3, 2024 in Kingston, Ontario and will include keynote speakers, a poster fair/oral presentations (TBD), and catered lunch. You may attend the abstract competition in-person or virtually, either live or pre-recorded.   CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: Anybody regardless of their level of study, program, or school is encouraged to submit. After review, select researchers will be invited to present a poster on their research the day of the conference (either a 3 minute presentation or at a poster fair). Posters/presentations will be judged by experienced researchers and awards/prizes will be given to the top scoring submissions.  

We're excited to share that we received a research grant award from the Environment and Sustainability Research Center at the Open University (https://lnkd.in/di-DpEYR), for an innovative trial aiming at reducing single-use plastic usage among Ultra-Orthodox households. In this research, we will develop personalized behavioral interventions tailored to the unique contextual and cultural aspects of this community.  Promoting sustainable behaviors, in addition to helping our planet, also significantly impacts our health. At For a Change, we recognize the reciprocal relationship between health and sustainability and embrace the concept of One Health. One Health advocates for a paradigm shift in research and policy that prioritizes the well-being of both people and the planet. With this support and the valuable collaborations we're fortunate to have, we are taking another step towards our mission of promoting health and sustainability using personalized behavioral interventions. My last one year pursuing a Masters in Global Health Delivery - One Health has been a becoming journey that has left me better personally and professionally. Indeed, we cannot separate the health of humans, animals and the environment - solutions have to be designed with an ecosystem lens for sustainable outcomes. Our latest thought-provoking editorial "How #HealthcareSystems Negatively Impact #EnvironmentalHealth? The Need for Institutional Commitment to Reduce the #EcologicalFootprint of #MedicalServices" is now published! In this editorial, we explore the often-overlooked #EnvironmentalImpact of healthcare systems. We emphasize the urgent need for a systemic shift in how medical services consider their ecological footprint. Healthcare professionals have a responsibility to not only care for the health of their patients but also to safeguard the health of our planet, adopting a #OneHealth approach. This piece calls for a concerted effort from institutions at all levels to integrate #EnvironmentalSustainability into healthcare practices. The connection between the health of our environment and the health of our communities is undeniable. We believe that as part of the healthcare community, we have the power and responsibility to lead this change. Let's open up the dialogue and take concrete steps towards a healthcare system that is both effective and environmentally conscious.
