Enjoying a presentation from the brilliant Sue Carter Kahl that looks at volunteerism as part of the gift economy rather than the market economy. It's a great reminder that we cannot measure how much volunteers are "worth" through dollar and hour values. Worth is more than that: it is stewardship, it is sharing, it is relationship-centered. We must shift nonprofit mindsets from managing and hoarding unpaid workers' time to stewarding genuine impact through community care. #ThankYou #LoVols #VolunteerEngagement

We are deeply grateful to the Indiana Bar Foundation for its recent grant for Indiana organizations whose mission is to provide civil legal assistance to low-income Hoosiers. The Indiana Bar Foundation awarded $4.4 million to 12 different organizations, and we were honored to be among them. Child Advocates offers legal services to help children who've been placed in the child welfare system find a safe, permanent home free from abuse or neglect. One of our unique services is the Direct Representation program, the only one in the state offering older children a free, in-house attorney to advocate for their legal rights in court and what they want for their future. Our CEO, Phyllis Armstrong, says, “Our work for vulnerable children would not be possible without the support of grantmakers such as foundations, corporations, or government agencies. We have helped more than 100,000 Indiana children in need with a variety of services during the last 40 years. This Volunteers’ Week, we’re highlighting our Older People’s Services (OPS) and the many, rewarding ways that volunteers can get involved with this area of our work. Glenda, our Director for Older People’s Services, (pictured top left) shares more: “Volunteers can help to connect an older person with their community and create meaningful relationships that they would otherwise miss out on. They enable us to provide the variety and level of care and support that we do and without them, we would be so much poorer and as a result so would the older people in our communities.” There are so many practical ways that volunteers can help older people to experience a rich and full life be that in our residential home or our Churches some examples are: - Craft and hobby-based clubs e.g. book clubs - Lunch clubs and CAMEO clubs (come and meet each other) - Our community choirs or singing by heart (our dementia friendly singing programme) - Day trips, outings or assisting somebody to go on a short walk - Reading to people, sitting and chatting to them and spending time with them. I've been volunteering at my local soup kitchen & food pantry and I'll tell you what: their team demonstrates #delegation and #empowerment in a way I had NEVER before witnessed in my career. Every day, 4 fulltime staff leaders direct 20-40 volunteers who range in age from teenage to elderly. Over half of the volunteers are either brand new or help out only once a month. The result? 👉 Staff leaders assign and move volunteers to tasks countless times per day, demonstrating zero hesitation around who is and isn't capable 🖐 Asking questions isn't only encouraged, it's mandatory to get things done – meaning volunteers comfortably ask for help all day without any judgement 👋 Volunteers who have done a task even ONE TIME before are asked to teach others how, inspiring confidence in volunteers' ability to learn, educate, and execute 👏 Trust inspires volunteers to quickly demonstrate leadership qualities, corralling idle hands when they need support chopping, carrying, or bagging Too often, we see risk-averse corporate tendencies slow down #productivity and #advancement. My local food pantry proves just how much can be accomplished when we reduce those barriers. 🙋♀️ Side note: if your mind is wandering to some version of "well, there's less to lose in a nonprofit" I encourage you to remember that whereas much of corporate risk is perception and usage, what this nonprofit has to lose is the ability to feed families that otherwise go hungry #fridayfeeling
