Our 3D Spatial team recently completed a 45 minute flight with our LiDAR platform and still had more than half a tank of fuel left! This means we can easily handle well in excess of one-hour missions with a good safety buffer. While our drones can handle longer flights, we cap missions at around one hour to keep our pilots fresh and to manage the massive datasets (over 100GB from our triple camera and LiDAR configuration). This endurance allows us to capture more than 300Ha, or up to 15km of road or infrastructure corridor per hour, whilst still achieving sub 20mm accuracy and well over 200 points per m2. Something that most UAV LiDAR providers cannot even come close to. 🚁 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐬 🏔️ I'm continuing my exploration of motion planning algorithms for UAVs, this time simulating a challenging scenario: navigating around unexpected terrain obstacles! My project utilizes LiDAR data to create a 3D model of a mountain range and simulates a UAV's flight path. I've intentionally set two waypoints such that the straight-line path collides with a mountain, requiring the UAV to dynamically adjust its course. This is where receding horizon planning (RHP) and artificial potential fields come in. RHP allows the UAV to re-plan its path in real-time based on newly sensed obstacles, while the potential field guides the UAV around obstacles using attractive and repulsive forces. I'm currently tuning the potential field and RHP parameters to ensure smooth and efficient obstacle avoidance while still making progress towards the next waypoint.
