"In my company, Systems Engineering and all other disciplines are starting at the same time, due to timing pressure!" Why is this a problem? (Excuse my brutal honesty in the following) ➡ Option A: It shows that management does not feel that the results of Systems Engineering are relevant to the domain/discipline experts. ➡ Option B: Systems Engineering is too slow. A customer demo is scheduled before any relevant analyses can be completed, the other disciplines just have to start already. ➡ Option C: Management is viewing Systems Engineering as a means of nice documentation for assessors. They see no value to development. What does this lead to? 🔄 A vicious cycle. Let's assume Systems Engineering was too slow ONCE. A prototype was shown to the customer. Customer was happy. 🤠 An assessment was scheduled. The assessor was unhappy. 😩 The Systems Engineering department asks what was built and reverse engineers it into their world of methods and tools. Second assessment. Assessor is happy. 🤓 🎓 What will be learned here? 1. The domain specialists can build cool things without SE. 2. SE is too slow to serve them anyway. 3. SE will make the assessor happy. And BOOM! 💣 SE is documentation only. 🐎 How to ESCAPE this cycle (especially if it has become the norm in your company) ➡ Be fast. Iterate at least as fast as the other disciplines. ➡ Be transparent. Let everyone participate and understand. ➡ Show value. Enhance communication from day one. Get your technical project UNSTUCK by knowing the difference between Systems Engineering and Systems Thinking - AND how Systems Architecting fits in. Systems Engineering is the process outlined in IEEE 15288, the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook, and the Systems Engineering Body of Knowledge (SEBoK). Systems Engineering is the art and craft (and 'art' used on purpose) of developing a workable solution to a tough problem - often technical, but not always - in a way that brings the project team to a workable solution within cost and budget constraints. Systems Engineering prevents large programs from going WAY off track despite everyone's good intentions and creative ideas. It manages the technical part of a large program - and when fully practiced can ensure the RIGHT problem is solved. Systems Thinking is a mindset, where we continually ask: 1. What else does our system touch? 2. Are there needs / requirements around these other areas? 3. Have we considered non-technical aspects like Human Factors, ...? Developing OUTSTANDING systems that solve the (real) problem for the customer, given cost/schedule constraints takes both the process (Systems Engineering) and the right mindset (Systems Thinking). You may be asking - what about Systems Architecting? Where does this come in? It comes in early on, when we have a first grasp of the customer needs (sometimes called stakeholder requirements), and come up with ideas on what a potential solution might look like. I wouldn't put systems architecting on the same level as Systems Engineering or Systems Thinking - but having an architecture to work with early on will help with requirement allocation, and interface-checking to see if we have everything. An architecture can also go easily into an MBSE tool - of which there are too many to list here! I want to be tool-independent. ** System thinking The construction of system-i-grams and application of DSRP framework are enriched by the systems engineer considering a handful of complementary systems thinking concepts including • System Boundaries—Is the system of interest bounded by an open, partial, or closed boundary to adjacent systems or environmental factors? • Visibility of the System—Are the elements or other systems surrounding the system of interest known or unknown? This can be thought of as black, grey, or white boxes describing transparency of other elements or systems and could motivate the systems engineer’s research efforts to eliminate uncertainty. • Stakeholders can be defined in many categories, including but not limited to: • Decision Authority—ultimate decision gate to approve or implement a system • Client—source of principle authority for defining system requirements • Owner—responsible for system operation • User—accountable for purposeful use of the system • Consumer—realizes benefits from the system and could be a user • Interconnected—connected to the system and have benefits/costs/risks from the system ** Common Themes of Systems Engineering These common themes form the basis for how systems engineering is applied in the development of systems Ø Top-down approach – Having an “overall” system concept (which means tolerating some ambiguity) used to evaluate different options as the design proceeds and to refine them until a detailed solution is achieved. Ø Life-cycle perspective – Taking into account the full life-cycle of a system when evaluating and designing the system, to ensure that the solutions perform as required for the given lifetime in a safe and economic manner. Ø System requirements emphasis – All the requirements, from initial needs created by the customer to the evolving needs of all other stakeholders, are constantly traced through system development, to ensure that the final delivered system meets all expectations Ø Interdisciplinary/integrated team approach – It must be recognized that the optimal solution from one engineering discipline may be less than optimal for the entire system, because of interface issues and conflict in design; system engineering involves coordination of efforts to identify system interfaces, to reduce conflict and bolster synergy in design .... to be continued ( 2 )
