U.S. exports of thermal coal to Asia and Africa surged in the first half of 2024, helping to drive overall U.S. coal exports to 53 million short tons from 49 million short tons in the first half of 2023. Exports of thermal coal from the United States to Asia increased by 19% in the first half of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. The increase was driven mainly by greater deliveries to India and China. India accounted for 57% of these exports to Asia in 2023 and continued to receive large amounts of U.S. thermal coal in the first half of 2024, led by industrial customers in the brickmaking sector. Chinese power companies accounted for most of the rest of the increase. https://lnkd.in/dxsy93U6 #coal

India aims to phase out coal imports by 2025, focuses on energy security. They've said it before with little result. This time Indian domestic coal production is growing significantly. https://lnkd.in/gVzvD8Bi In its recent Coal 2023 report, the IEA stated, "The strategic focus of the Indian government on reducing its import dependency is likely to lead to growth in domestic supply surpassing growth in demand." This will significantly impact coal exporters, not just in the long-term but in the short term - "Through to 2026, we expect global coal trade to decline by about 12%, driven by growing domestic production in coal-intensive economies such as China and India": IEA Coal 2023 #coal #India #ausbiz #investing #energytransition https://lnkd.in/gwmFbTMp

India’s coal production jumped by 14.5% from a year earlier to 84.63 million tons in June, provisional government figures showed, as the world’s second-largest coal consumer presses ahead with a plan to boost domestic thermal coal output. Last month, Coal India Ltd – which accounts for about 80% of all coal production in the country – saw its output rise to 63.10 million tons, up by 8.9% compared to June 2023. In addition, Indian companies and thermal power plants raised the volumes of coal stocks they held in…

Excerpt from recent Mongolia economic report by World Bank, here it seems misinformed as the overwhelming majority of mongolian coal exports are coking coal that are not used in energy production but used in steel making process (aka metallurgical or steelmaking coal). Green steel & electric furnace that would produce steel without coking coal are under development but so far no commercially competitive & viable version is available in the near future to replace coking coals. That means coking coal would still be around as long as the world needs steel, which is used in everything from constructions, cars… to space ships & renewable energy wind farms. (+Indian steel output is currently just 1/10th of Chinese output of 1 bln tonnes despite having same population. Believe already fast growing Indian urbanization, manufacturing & infrastructure spending will continue in next decades and with it its steel output -> this means world would need more iron ore & coking coals to make steels + other commodities such as copper, nickels etc)

India's Thermal Coal Imports Hit Six-Month Low in July 2024 India's thermal coal imports witnessed a significant dip in July 2024, marking a six-month low as monsoon rains brought down temperatures, reducing the demand for air conditioning. 🌧️ This seasonal decline in power demand was further supported by growth in the hydropower and wind energy sectors. 🌬️⚡ Market Pulse: - Monthly Decline: Thermal coal imports fell by 1% from June 2024 to 13.57 million tonnes (mt) 📉. - Annual Increase: Despite the monthly decline, imports were up by 21% year-on-year 📊, reflecting India's expanding industrial and commercial base 🏭. - Energy Consumption: In July, India's energy consumption rose by 4% y-o-y to 145.4 billion units (BU), down from the record peak of 156.31 BU in May 2024 📈. - Domestic Coal Supply: Coal stockpiles at power stations monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) remained robust, exceeding 45 mt, approximately a third higher y-o-y 🏗️. - Domestic Production: Domestic coal production in July increased by 6.36% y-o-y to 74 mt, though slightly lower m-o-m due to monsoon-induced disruptions 🌧️. As India's economy continues to industrialize and expand, the underlying growth in thermal coal demand remains strong. However, the combination of favorable weather conditions and a shift towards renewable energy sources has moderated the need for thermal coal, signaling a potential shift in the energy landscape. 🔄 📊 Stay tuned for more updates on India's evolving energy dynamics. #IndiaEnergy #CoalImports #RenewableEnergy #PowerSector #TradeInsights

So, the good news here is that the US domestic #coal consumption has decreased to about where things were in 1964, as the #energy sector shifts away from coal (about 70% of domestic consumption still goes to #power generation). On the other hand, actual coal production is UP, though, thanks to increased coal exports, primarily #metallurgical coal (for making #coke as part of the #steelmaking process), demand for which "for some strange reason" spiked in 2022. On the other other hand, one of our major coal export ports is #Baltimore, which......yeah. https://lnkd.in/eeHHj6d8

IENERGY: MONTHLY COAL MARKET UPDATE (AUGUST 2024) iEnergy: Monthly Coal Market Update (August 2024) International thermal coal prices in August initially reversed their bearish trend and saw a significant upward correction. However, prices soon shifted back into bearish territory as major importers, particularly India and China, scaled back their procurement activities. Even supply disruptions in Indonesia failed to support coal prices during the month. The market’s brief bullishness was driven more by sentiment than by strong fundamental demand. Prices for South African, Russian, and Australian coal increased, while U.S. coal prices remained stable. In contrast, Indonesian low CV coal prices stayed under pressure. Even the further sanctions on Russia, the hoped-for price rally failed to materialise. Listen to our Sr. Analyst-Coal & Coke Riya Vyas for the brief of coal market updates for August month.

India's thermal coal imports jumped 12% year-over-year to nearly 80 million tonnes in January-May 2024, up from just over 71 million tonnes in the same period last year, says BigMint (formerly SteelMint/CoalMint) Why? - Sustained heatwave, with temperatures nearing 50 degrees, driving higher imports to prevent summer shortages. - Demand for hydropower fell 10% year-over-year due to erratic rainfall patterns, increasing reliance on thermal power. - The Ministry of Power extended the mandate for imported coal-based plants to run at full capacity until 15 October to meet summer demand.
