#WeAreTheGuard | Why do I love my job? This... right... here. The Army National Guard showcased its battle against the Camp Fire in #California in this #recruiting video from 2019. I will be training with many of these same units this week and into the weekend. Some disasters are natural, and can feel like the wrath of God. Some disasters are man-made, and can incinerate and/or irradiate whole cities. California has had nearly a dozen record-breaking #wildfires this past decade, and mass-casualty events involving CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, & high-yield Explosives) are a growing risk. We continually train for various scenarios here in the homeland, in addition to maintaining readiness to deploy overseas to support Active Component missions. And it's all a "Part-Time Job", but the standards remain high. Our nation, our communities, and our neighbors deserve no less. It reminds me of a portion of the poem "I Am The Shield" that I will paraphrase... Use us as your shield and you will never be hurt. Use us as your defense and none shall break through. Use us as your weapon and we shall never dull. Use us as your guardian and we will never fail you. "Always Ready, On The Way!" US Army National Guard Bureau United States Department of Defense

A similar conversation to this one occurred during the Cold War: should the United States military invest more in conventional or unconventional capabilities? Each presidential administration during the period had differing approaches to this question, with differing results. This conversation is different of course but is similar in that military leaders will have to decide between the old and the new. While the traditional cannon mass-fire missions have a successful proven record, with modern-day applications tested and proven in Ukraine, new, longer-range artillery capabilities have tremendous potential for altering the modern battlefield. Although I am not an artilleryman nor an Army Veteran (Go Navy), I would venture to say that a balance between precision and conventional munitions is important until new capabilities can be proven, while the development of those new technologies should continue to be heavily invested in. As we have seen in Ukraine, artillery is critical to modern battle, which would also be the case during a conflict between great powers. #Army #Artillery #DOD/

Inside the Navy's $2B plan to surge solid-rocket motor production and revitalize a historic arsenal By Nick Wilson Abby Shepherd / March 4, 2024 | INSIDE DEFENSE As demand for munitions surges amid heightened global tensions, the Navy has launched a multibillion-dollar plan to fill critical industrial base gaps by revitalizing the government-run production of solid-rocket motors and other key energetics at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division. Located less than an hour’s drive from Washington, the Maryland facility is in the early stages of a new Energetics Comprehensive Modernization plan (ECMP) -- an initiative that will put roughly $2 billion into 500 infrastructure projects over the next decade. According to Ashley Johnson, the center’s technical director, this investment is necessary to get Indian Head back in shape after two decades of inattention, during which the Pentagon was focused on counterterrorism rather than sustaining a munitions industrial base capable of supporting competition with peer or near-peer adversaries. “ECMP looked at that systematically and said, these are the 500 projects that have to happen in order for us to regain our competencies and reestablish not only the brick and mortar but also the intellectual capital,” Johnson told Inside Defense during an exclusive interview at the facility. The near-term goal of ECMP is completing a series of long-neglected maintenance jobs -- repairing roads, replacing pipes and upgrading electrical systems -- to fully realize Indian Head’s existing, but partially dormant, production capacity. The facility is designed to research, develop, test and produce various energetics including explosives, propellants and other materials used in ordnance and propulsion systems. Due to a shortage of private-sector producers, Indian Head’s first objective is surging solid-rocket motor production to help industry meet the growing demand for munitions like the Standard Missile family. “The most important functional output for Indian Head given our adversaries is our solid-rocket motor production capability,” Johnson said. “In order for [RTX] to make as many missiles as we would like them to make, we need to increase the amount of solid-rocket motors available for them to use.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ez8HmBpe

Of course. the term "Cluster Munitions" cover a lot of ground: ICM; DPICM; USAF "Cluster Bombs;" and even FASCAM. The "dud rate" on ICM/DPICM means areas you hit with these munitions will have a good amount of unexploded munitions (a serious problem in the aftermath of the Gulf War).
Ukrainian press reporting on the piece Dan Rice 🇺🇸 🇺🇦 and I wrote based on The United States Army War College talk he gave earlier this week. BLUF: Ukraine can win with more munitions, esp. cluster munitions. https://lnkd.in/eRRmJJqz

We will continue to offer our training classes to USG without any expenses for the rest of this year. This request must come from your 0-3/0-4. Our classes include one-day training sessions for Air Force/Marine personnel to get familiar with non-standard armor and artillery. This class lets students get hands-on in various tanks and artillery to get a better understanding of strengths, weaknesses, crew positions, etc. The five-day class for Army and ground personnel consists of non-standard weapons familiarization to include assembly/disassembly, expedient demil and live-fire familiarization with each system. The weapons are pre-selected for each area of operation. Also included is learning how to start, drive and operate non-standard main battle tanks, armored personnel carriers and artillery. This class finishes off with sUAS operation and instructions with students crashing FPV units into M113's on the move in addition to understanding thermal cameras with terrain scanning and dropping inert 60mm and 81mm mortar bombs. Here is a link to that lists what we have available: https://lnkd.in/gVHm_8mz
