When should you retire from the military? This question is crucial for service members with over 20 years of service. One key factor to consider is how your retirement date affects your Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). During my Executive Transition Assistance Program (ETAP) class at Joint Base San Antonio Randolph AFB we discussed an influential research report by a United States Air Force Colonel titled "The COLA Trap - Picking the Wrong Retirement Date COULD COST YOU THOUSANDS." Our instructor suggested we contact the author for updated insights since the data was a few years old. Then, to everyone's surprise, a classmate raised his hand and introduced himself: "I'm Doug Fowler, and I wrote that paper." The room erupted in applause. 👏👏 Having read and shared his paper, I largely chose my retirement date (December 1st) based on his findings. Shane Cuéllar brings up a great question; many folks in uniform may not give consideration to the larger pieces of the puzzle when planning for the proper time to retire from the military once you're past that 20yr point. For me, I used "The COLA Trap" paper written by Doug Fowler and I balanced this approach with my time in grade, time in service, and a few other things to determine my retirement date. In the end, I took the advice of the paper, shortened my time in uniform by 1 month, and retired in June 2023 instead of July 2023. This change of 1 month has resulted in avoiding a pay inversion and my retirement difference increased by $340/yr compared to retiring per my original plan. This is all due to the differences in how that first Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) is calculated and applied after retirement which COL Fowler talks about in his paper. While somewhat insignificant of a difference at first (less than $30/mos more); the COLA Trap paper outlines what is effectively a compounding interest problem. So, that $340/yr gap I have now, will only increase as I get further past my retirement and additional adjustments are made over time. I am tracking this, and by my current projections, at a flat 3% increase over the next ten years, I will have gained nearly $5000 more in retirement compared to having stayed in for that 1mos more.
