Re: NGAD. We cannot afford to delay an air superiority platform. We already prematurely cancelled F-22, which left our nation a generation behind … we cannot afford to “skip” a generation. We must move forward. As SecAF Kendall said, “we are out of time” … so why wait? I understand that the justification is ‘emerging intelligence about adversary capabilities.’ I would argue, the real reason is budget. There are things that are enduring about the threat - and to be clear, it’s China. The geography of the Pacific is pretty stable. Range, speed, payload, maneuverability, flight envelope, shaping, SWAPC, these are the physical attributes that will be enduring and reliable. It’s the sensors, avionics, processing, apertures, etc that will rapidly change. Think about - why are the B-52 and F-16 such long-lived platform? They have a sweet spot of aerodynamic attributes for their mission and inherent adaptability for capability insertion. Thats what we should strive for in NGAD. An enduring platform w the SWAPC that we missionize and modernize as systems and capabilities mature. We cannot wait. We need to begin building NGAD NOW with the capabilities we have NOW - and, with forward thinking optionality to insert capabilities when those technologies mature sufficiently (this means getting serious about OMS). Kendall is right. We don’t have time to wait. We cannot afford to “pause” NGAD like we did w Next Gen-Bomber…. And we are fooling ourselves if we think we can leap ahead a generation of technology in a relevant timeline. We need NGAD, a penetrating air superiority fighter. And we need it now. (There’s a discussion of inside force, survivabiltiy, and family of systems that’s also relevant here, but those are for other posts). #airpower #airforce #ngad #airsuperiority #dod #nationalsecurity
Aerospace Advantage 196: We can’t achieve victory through standoff capabilities alone. It is crucial to fly and fight inside an enemy’s defended airspace. That requires air superiority. Heather Penney chats with David A. Deptula, Mark Gunzinger, JV Venable, Mike Dahm, and Douglas Birkey about Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD).
