Groot, Professor X or Dr. Strange: How Veterans Best Network in the Civilian world.
This is a crazy article...sorry Military.com...the analogies are a bit nuts. My hope is whomever reads it, they don't take it literally with "super powers" and such.
Here's the bottomline...
1. If you have made the decision to leave the military, start building your personal portfolio (more on this at #2) and start building through LinkedIn your new network.
2. Your personal portfolio. Take out all those Efficiency Reports (OER, NCOER, etc) and start pulling out all that you accomplished and even those "hey you" tasks you performed...they count too. Use the STAR format...Situation, Task, Action, Results. Next, start categorizing these STARs into core competencies (communications, business skills, leadership, influencing others, etc). This process takes a lot of time but well worth it and will help you develop your "cheat sheet" for interviews as well as fill in your resume.
3. Take your STARs and rehearse...a lot.
4. NEVER....EVER...SELL YOURSELF SHORT!!! You know more than you think you do!!
Networking should NEVER end even after you transitioned and landed a job. It is perpetual!!!
Want to put this into practice? For those Veterans and spouses near Atlanta...come the the VETLANTA Q1 Summit on 28 February at Clay National Guard Center. It is not only our 10-year Anniversary...we will have a mini-job fair and will have more than 40 non-profits/companies and have almost 2-hours set aside for not just networking....it's networking on steroids. Business casual dress, free event, free parking, free food & beverage...all you've got to do is register at VETLANTA.org. Have your elevator speech down and have resumes on hand. You never know who you may meet and network with...I've seen Veterans get hired on-the-spot overnthe last 10-years!!!
