This is not a post about chocolate. It’s a culture lesson. Last year I put a call out on LinkedIn for someone from the chocolate industry to help my son with some research for a school project. The power of this platform connected me with a kind man so generous with his time. And yesterday I met him in real life. Michael Huggins (pictured below with us) gave a very warm welcome to Cadbury’s home in Bourneville as it celebrates its 200th year celebrations. My kids expected to eat chocolate all day. What they got instead was a lesson in culture. Everything Michael talked about connected back to the original ethos the Cadbury brothers had envisaged for a business trying to do things differently. Some might say, ahead of their time. Walking around Cadbury World there were so many references to how, over the years, employees were front and centre of decision making - from welfare provisions and healthcare to housing, recreation and celebration. Visitors can’t possibly avoid being immersed in the importance of the company’s culture and its central, yet humble, community role as part of their visit, and so of course it was something I discussed with the kids at length. Today, the business holds on to a Glassdoor score of 4 which I looked up on my way home. Thank you Michael. We all enjoyed meeting you and hearing about your almost four decade long career journey with company. Your passion shines. As we close out #AAPIHeritageMonth I reflect upon the inspiring and insightful #DEI event that the Cargill Asian Alliance Network hosted for an engaging cultural learning experience. Special shoutout 👏🏽 to Kimberly Luong and Julia Ostlund for all the hard work, time, energy, and leadership you put into organizing this event! Sharing some of my key takeaways from the outstanding pannelists Rishi Varma, Dr. Sarah-SoonLing Blackburn, and David Mura: 🌎 Different is a good thing! 🙅🏻♀️Interrupt "Executive Presence" Bias - let's rethink what this means, challenge the "standard" of what we mean. 💡Creativity doesn't come from sameness - it comes from more ideas, more knowledge. 🇺🇸 Greatness of America is the diversity of our culture. 📈Company growth relies on diverse ideas, groups, especially as a global company - sameness will not help us. 🧠 Leverage the diversity around us to build a better brain. 🌟 Cultivate curiosity. 🎬 Call to Action: • Be aware when you are having a judgmental thought of difference - different is simply different, check your value judgements. • Allys need to Actively "Echo" to advocate for others. Engage in these types of events. • Seek difference in your daily lives - watch tv, see a show from a different ethnicity/background than yourself. • Keep stepping towards one another when someone asks/says something uncomfortable to seek learning understanding, come from a place of calm and openness.

The ACTs is a game changer - the key word here is 'Accelerated'! The ACTs achieves powerful culture change that is sustainable .... and in shorter timeframes than traditional change/training efforts!

Here's to picking up where I left off with my last post. The foundational principles of the LDC all revolve around fostering a community of collaboration through transparency and sharing of resources. The central concept we're applying here is familiar; maybe you've applied something similar while playing a game. Sometimes, working with others you may be competing with to accomplish a goal you couldn't do otherwise is advantageous. So, in this instance, for LDC members, instead of not directly cooperating with another company that does almost exactly what they do, they could team up with those other companies to achieve a goal that would otherwise be out of reach. The core group of Local Delivery Coalition members spent a month discussing how they can work together and build trust through leveraging contracts and being transparent. After many hours debating the best ways to accomplish this, we ultimately agreed to a charter and that the charter document would need periodic revisions as we tested our concepts and learned from our outcomes. Ultimately, we aim to provide best-in-class delivery services for the end customer by working closely with businesses that want to differentiate their last-mile deliveries. Molson Coors is the latest addition to a growing list of companies reversing their diversity, equity and inclusion policies … … as “it’s not 2020” are key drivers for this change. So Molson Coors Beverage Company is pumping the brakes on DEI. The recognition that ‘inmates don’t run the prison’ is taking hold here as well at many other firms — of all sizes, shapes, products and services. Public companies’ main goal — always, is to remain profitable and grow sales and earnings. They have shareholders to consider not just activists to consider. Duh.
