Here's an interesting experiment: The Washington Post's Opinion section is publishing pieces that were originally posted to Substack. The Post pays the writer a fee and then introduces their piece with a link to their Substack publication. The publication gets fresh voices and the writers get paid. https://hubs.ly/Q02FVQWH0

Award-winning journalist and editor for 24 years + Freelance writer specializing in content for boutique and global lifestyle brands (travel, health and wellness, beauty and e-commerce)
As a travel writer for many of your favorite top-tier publications, I'm invited on a ton of press trips (as many as 5-10 per week). But I end up declining 95% of them because of how the invitation is worded. Some make unethical demands that don't fly in my industry, others use red flag language that makes me wary of working with an agency, and others are just missing crucial information I need to make this important business decision. If you're wondering WHY your press trip invitations aren't getting more RSVPs, double check your approach against this blueprint for the perfect press trip invitation (which I received last week): https://lnkd.in/g9KfY9hv Now that you've read it, what will you do differently?
Let's Talk About: I've Just Received the PERFECT Press Trip Invite (Hint: Every Publicist Should Copy It)!

Senior Director of Communications at Harvard Kennedy School | Curiosity-Driven Leader | Amplifying Empowering Stories to Inspire Change
One of the hardest things to do as an expert, or as a professional writer, is to put aside your own knowledge and think about what the person you want to reach needs to know. Research suggests simple can be more effective.
Researchers find that readers prefer simpler headlines (unless they're journalists), even when the stories are about complicated topics https://ken.sc/4dbVzvs

Substack. Anyone using it for comms purposes? Or aware of any research/insight/blogs that look into how it performs for individual authors? A lot of the blogs I follow have migrated there recently so I’ve become exposed to it’s consumer facing functionality and wanting to learn more from a professional perspective. Keen to learn more about best practice, whether any journalists are using it to find stories or experts, etc. Ta!

You have to connect to your audience… Before you start writing a copy, you should do a whole market research. In the research you can figure out: - Where is the reader - What are their pains/desires - What do they want to achieve If you miss this step, then you’re just skipping the broing work. But this boring work will make your copy 1000x times more!

I'm excited to share an update on my first year writing the Miss Information blog. I've been quietly curating concise insights on misinformation, disinformation, and other pertinent First Amendment issues. I use this space to unpack the complexities, providing readers with two-minutes of informed analysis, infused with a personal perspective and a touch of humor. Why did I embark on this blogging adventure? Essentially, I wanted to bridge the gap between academia and the wider audience. I also love to write. Miss Information allows me to do both, bringing my experience as a research librarian to the forefront and sharing insights that are accessible to everyone. I’m happy to report that my readers like what I am doing, highlighting ideas that resonate with them, and increasing my visibility. This reaffirms my belief in the potency of concise communication, and affords me a solid opportunity to continue honing my skills in distilling complex information into digestible, bite-size pieces. The most important thing I learned this year is that I thought I was providing a diversity of perspectives in my posts. I wasn’t or at least not in a meaningful way. So I made a plan. In the year ahead, I'm embarking on a journey of deeper exploration. I'm venturing into online communities that may not typically engage with my content, particularly those within conservative spheres. My aim is to gain a deeper understanding of their perspectives which is necessary if I want to contribute responsibly to the discourse surrounding misinformation. I'm also delving into the viewpoints of Generation Z for similar reasons. If you are already a reader, thank you for your ongoing support and engagement. If you haven’t had the opportunity, I invite you to please take a couple of minutes to read a recent post or two. Find Miss Information at https://lnkd.in/gJ843apw
