Welcome to #Turku.AI 22.11.2023 18:00 @ #sparkup. #CIC - Centre for Intelligent Computing Kaj-Mikael Björk, Director of CIC (Centre for Intelligent Computing) obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at 2002 (Åbo Akademi) and his Ph.D. in Business Administration (Information Systems, Åbo Akademi) at 2006. He is now working mainly as the Director of CIC (cic.utu.fi) but also as the Head of Research in Silo.AI. AI and Generative AI have been identified as one of the biggest game changers of the entire society. Can researchers and industry in the Turku region be a significant player in the transition the society goes through? What is needed in order to be recognized even world-wide? How can a centre help in setting Turku on the AI map once and for all? These are questions that will be discussed during the presentation and during the discussion afterwards. Autonomous Land Vehicle for Military and Civilian Applications Jukka Heikkonen, Professor University of Turku since 2009. His current research as the head of the Algorithms and Computational Intelligent (ACI) research group is related to data analytics, machine learning and data/sensor fusion based autonomous systems. The speech focuses on the research collaboration between the University of Turku and the Finnish Defence Forces in the development of autonomous systems. The research utilizes the Autonomous Multipurpose Ground Vehicle (AMGV) Laykka demonstration platform developed by the Finnish Defence Forces. Laykka is capable of moving autonomously in various terrain and is available for both military and civilian applications. EUROPEAN RESEARCH PROJECT: KITT4SME - platform-enabled KITs of arTificial intelligence FOR an easy uptake by SMEs The last meeting was held in GHEPI in which the activities of our Pilot on Collaborative Robotics conducted to validate the KITT4SME platform and its modules were concretely outlined, in particular the Fatigue Monitoring System (FaMS), the Intervention Manager (IM) and the Sensing Layer (SL). The main objectives of the Project were successfully represented, specifically: reducing the Production Operator's workload and stress levels, increasing job satisfaction and improving well-being and motivation of Workers through the integration of the AI system. We thank very much the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland, CRIT s.r.l., Holonix Researchers and the GHEPI People who have become passionate about KITT4SME, allowing us to apply Artificial Intelligence to our production process and experiment with concrete results. CDT Student Bradley Hurst, and CDT Academics Nicolla Bellotto and Petra Bosilj, had their paper "An assessment of self-supervised learning for data efficient potato instance segmentation" published in #TAROS 2023: Towards Autonomous Robotic Systems in September 2023. The study investigates the effectiveness of self-supervised learning in agri-robotics, specifically for segmenting densely packed potato tubers in storage. It finds that the impact of self-supervised methods on the segmentation task is modest but beneficial, with a simpler approach proving more effective for larger datasets and a more intricate method showing superior performance with a smaller, refined self-supervised dataset.
