📃Scientific paper: Strong Lensing by Galaxy Clusters Abstract: Galaxy clusters as gravitational lenses play a unique role in astrophysics and cosmology: they permit mapping the dark matter distribution on a range of scales; they reveal the properties of high and intermediate redshift background galaxies that would otherwise be unreachable with telescopes; they constrain the particle nature of dark matter and are a powerful probe of global cosmological parameters, like the Hubble constant. In this review we summarize the current status of cluster lensing observations and the insights they provide, and offer a glimpse into the capabilities that ongoing, and the upcoming next generation of telescopes and surveys will deliver. My first paper was based on one HST image that I didn't even reduce. My PhD student's first paper combines Chandra, Hubble, Gemini North IFU, JVLA, LOFAR, NOT slit spectroscopy, and ALMA data (!!!), all exquisitely reduced and analyzed by the lead author, to discover one of the most powerful AGN outbursts yet known in a galaxy cluster. 🔆India embarks on its first-ever winter expedition to the Arctic, starting this week. Significance: With this initiative, India’s Himadri becomes the fourth research station in the Arctic to be manned year-round Expedition Team: A team of four scientists, funded by the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, will conduct the expedition from December 19, 2023, to January 15, 2024. Research Areas: The expedition will focus on atmospheric sciences, astronomy, astrophysics, climate studies, and more. Himadri Station: The team will be based at Himadri, India’s sole research station in Ny-Ålesund,1,200 kilometres from the North Pole. Special Preparations: Himadri has been equipped for polar night observations, with support from Norwegian agencies. The first Indian expedition to the Arctic was in 2007, leading to the establishment of Himadri in 2008. We propose using RNA sequencing to detect how cells responded to hostile environments on ancient Earth or Mars. Noah Manning, a fourth-year Physics/Astrophysical Sciences and Technology BS/MS major, is doing research at RIT under the NASA Space Grant. He works with Dr. Richard O'Shaughnessy, reanalyzing GWTC-3, the third gravitational-wave transients catalog, to determine differences in parameter estimation of compact binary coalescence sources that arise from the choice of gravitational-wave model used. Having more accurate models – and knowing where these differences occur – allows us to determine more accurate parameters of these systems. These values inform us about the system, leading to findings regarding information on the environments around compact objects and even an independent measurement of the Hubble constant. "Working on this project for the summer has given me firsthand experience in computational astrophysics research. I was able to improve my coding abilities, learn about gravitational waves, compact binaries, and improve my understanding of statistics. This opportunity has made me more confident in who I am as a researcher and my abilities as I use this project as a stepping stone for my master's thesis."

#JamesWebbSpaceTelescope offers new insights into the Orion Nebula ✨ Astronomers, including researchers from UK ATC, have released six new papers in Astronomy & Astrophysics on the Orion Nebula. The international team used MIRI and NIRCam to capture a series of stunning images and spectroscopic data. Providing detailed information on the Orion Bar region, focusing on the processes that are relevant for star- and planet-formation. Pamela Klaassen, astronomer at the UK ATC and co-author on some of the papers, said: “JWST allows us to study the Orion Nebula in unprecedented detail. Not only providing us with amazing images but also revealing new information on the physical and chemical composition of this region of space, increasing our understanding of how our galaxy evolves." #Astronomy | 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝗯-𝗡𝗲𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 | Researchers from the University of Geneva and the University of Bern, led by Dr. Adrien Leleu, have made a noteworthy discovery in the realm of planetary science. Their study, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, uncovers the underlying reasons for the density differences among sub-Neptune planets. Through advanced numerical models developed over the last two decades at the University of Bern, they found that the formation and evolution of planetary systems produce two distinct populations of sub-Neptunes: dense and less dense. Interestingly, planets in resonance were discovered to be less dense. Their research also confirmed that giant collisions, on par or more intense than the one that formed our Moon are common in most planetary systems. We’re shedding light on our astrophotonics research. Astrophotonics is an emerging field where astronomy and photonics meet to push the limits of our ability to explore the universe. Our experts use light processing chips for sensing, astronomy and communications applications. We use astrophotonics to process light from the night sky and to explore the universe. “Astrophotonics allows you to put an entire instrument on the tip of your finger, processing starlight with chips instead of a table of lenses, filters and mirrors,” said Dr. Ross Cheriton, Research Officer at the Quantum and Nanotechnologies Research Centre. Our nanophotonics experts and Carleton University research students built this microsatellite as a potential pathfinder to see how low-cost spacecraft and astrophotonics can be used to study other stars and the atmospheres of their exoplanets. Our researchers are also working with astronomers at our Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre to develop new astrophotonics technologies for next-generation instruments. Dedicating one’s life to black holes! Andrea Ghez on receiving her Nobel Prize citation and medal on 9 December 2020 in Beverly Hills. Andrea Ghez is an American astrophysicist known for her groundbreaking work in observing the black hole at the center of our galaxy called Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). Using high-powered telescopes and sophisticated imaging techniques, she has been able to observe the stars orbiting around this invisible object. Her research provided strong evidence that a supermassive black hole exists at the center of our galaxy. One of Ghez’s significant contributions has been the use of adaptive optics technology in astronomy. This technology compensates for the blurring effect of the Earth’s atmosphere, allowing for clearer and more detailed images of celestial objects. With this, she has been able to track the movements of stars near Sgr A* with unprecedented precision. Her decades-long study of the stars’ orbits around Sgr A* has not only confirmed the presence of a black hole but also helped scientists better understand the properties and behavior of these enigmatic objects. Ghez’s work has been crucial in providing insights into how supermassive black holes interact with their surrounding environments and influence the galaxies in which they reside. In recognition of her contributions to the study of black holes, Andrea Ghez was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2020, shared with Roger Penrose and Reinhard Genzel. Is astrobiology serious science ? For sure, if your job looks like aliens hunting, it might somehow be affecting your scientific credibility. https://lnkd.in/eJhTzpMF In this short paper published in Nature Astronomy, I outline with my Durham University and University of Edinburgh colleagues what it takes to be a serious science. More specifically, I address 3 major criticisms often encountered when astrobiology is involved: that astrobiology (1) has no proper subject of study, (2) is more science fiction than science and (3) is merely just a buzzword for funding and recognition.
