Pleased to share my new badge of Biomimetic Architecture Course. Biomimetic architecture is a multidisciplinary scientific approach to sustainable design that goes beyond using nature as inspiration for aesthetics, but rather deeply studying and applying construction principles that are found in natural environments and species. | Roca Gallery | TOPIC OF THE MONTH - Design for Interspecies Cohabitation The global ecosystem is increasingly out of balance as a result of the accumulation of human activities over many years. In our exploration of ways to recover this balance, numerous questions arise about how to design for a world that is shifting from an anthropocentric approach to one of interdependence between humans and nature. More and more we are realising that we have a great deal to learn from the other species who share our planet as we imagine a future based on cohabitation and cooperation. Part II | The Possibilities of Historical Reinterpretation Part II, encompassing various explorations of issues related to the renovation and restoration, reinterpretation and reconstruction of historic architecture, and through such diverse design research and theoretical depictions, provides examples concerning urban and spatial potentials as well as humanistic and historical reinterpretation possibilities within the realm of contemporary architectural design, aiming to enrich its methodology and vocabulary, ultimately leading to more profound and diversified practices. In this part, the focuses range from central historic urban blocks to contemporary historical urban districts in Guangzhou, and even broader indigenous areas in China, covering examples from the renovation of specific conserved architectural entities, the evolution of historical urban neighborhoods, to the reinterpretation of abstract principles from Chinese traditional architecture, and the further introduction of propositions for the revitalization of representative post-industrial areas in the United States. The Federal Minister of Housing, Urban Development and Building, #Klara_Geywitz, has announced the curators for the German contribution to the 19th #Architecture #Biennale in #Venice. A commission of nine experts has selected and commissioned the “STRESSTEST” team consisting of Prof. elisabeth endres, Technische Universität Braunschweig, Prof. Dr. Daniele Santucci, Climateflux GmbH and RWTH Aachen University, Nicola Borgmann, Architekturgalerie München, and Prof. Gabriele G. Kiefer, TU Braunschweig. peter cachola schmal, Director of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) Frankfurt and Chairman of the Expert Commission: “Is it really necessary to revisit climate change and the associated warming of our living environments? Obviously, because we are not showing the urgent need to prioritize our actions. The team around Elisabeth Endres and Daniele Santucci will bring the topic to life in an exciting way and at the same time offer solutions to Carlo Ratti's motto of the 19th Biennale Architettura 2025 ‘Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.' with an answer.” The “STRESSTEST” team is addressing the issue of adapting our built environment to overheating. #Overheating in our cities and natural environments is already having life-threatening consequences for people, animals and plants. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges and buildings are suffering considerable structural damage due to extreme heat. In the future, temperatures will reach levels that are far beyond the bearable. With its proposal for the 19th Architecture Biennale 2025, the curatorial team wants to convey the urgency of this topic and make it tangible. How does heat affect our lives in public spaces? 📝 CALL FOR PAPERS | The international journal "Architecture, Structures and Construction", by Springer Nature Group has published a call for papers for a special issue entitled "Heritage in Transformation: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Cultural Heritage in a Changing World". I am joining with my research center (Instituto de Estudos Medievais, from NOVA FCSH) Prof. Pasquale Cucco (Università degli Studi di Salerno) and Prof. Pietro Vecchi (Aichi Shukutoku University), as guest editor. Proposals may focus broadly on the theme of cultural heritage in transformation (buildings, sites, landscapes, etc.) with an emphasis on methods, tools, and strategies to protect cultural heritage and avoid the loss of tangible and intangible values. I recently visited the Victoria and Albert Museum for 'Tropical Modernism - Architecture and Independence'. The exhibition focuses on the decolonisation of British territories, particularly in terms of a kind of 'handover' of responsibilities in the built environment - impacting on architecture and sustainability in these hot countries leaving British rule. This called to mind some Passivhaus concepts and even the controversial and complex Future Homes Standards that have kept builders on their toes since 2016, promising all new builds to be up to 80% more energy-efficient by 2025. It's interesting to see that a few of the tried and true methods on show are being revived, despite most of the practices being abandoned decades ago. With global temperatures on a rapid rise, will we see more of these old zero carbon practices being tweaked for modern use or are we approaching a 'too hot to handle' scenario? #builtEnvironment #architecture #exhibition

Ever consider what architecture and building design might look like when informed by planetary boundaries? A cool little exhibit put on by the Royal Danish Academy explores how the architecture and design of the future can co-exist with a balanced planet. The focal point of the 'Planetary Boundaries – Rethinking Architecture and Design' exhibition is to perceive the world from a fresh perspective, seeking an approach to architecture and design disciplines that revolves around planetary well-being and the state of the global environment. This exhibition, which is free of charge, allows users to experience 25 selected projects which – from an academic architectural or design perspective – ponder the potential for innovative design, building materials and types of dwellings with wide-ranging aesthetics – but a tiny planetary footprint. Each of the 25 projects exhibited considers one or more of the nine planetary boundary parameters. Great legacies endure through remembrance: On this day in 1969, architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe passed away in Chicago, Illinois. Over five decades later, we continue to admire his work and promote the knowledge of his legacy. ✨ In this sense, in addition to preserving and disseminating knowledge about the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, through a variety of cultural and academic activities, promotes the study of the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich and the Modern Movement, as well as debate and awareness of issues related to contemporary architecture and urbanism. Among their key initiatives is the organisation, jointly with the European Commission, of the EUmies Awards, one of the most prestigious of all European architecture prizes.
