Words are tricky. Their definitions creep and mold into all kinds of interesting places in ways that we often don't realize. What do I mean? This is a point that's being driven as I try to sift through and apply for jobs. I'm finding that words can mean very, very different job descriptions that are categorized together. Let's take a look at a few: 'Mechanical Engineer' Do you mean someone who solves the equations about whether a structure or mechanism will work? Or the person who makes the design in the first place? What about all the people who deal with fluid flow? Hey! What about all the people in facilities or construction work? 'Systems Engineer' Are you architecting the system? Working with requirements? Figuring out the concept of operations? Validation and Verification work? Which? (Plus, I know software engineers have a different view on systems work from how they write job descriptions but I'm not one. So, I don't know 😁) 'Senior-level' Is this 5 years or experience or 25? (yes, this is the variance I've seen) Maybe this seems too technical (thanks for hanging in there!), here's my point: This is complicated, frustrating, and time-sucking to work through. If you don't work to establish and maintain a common language in your organization, you're opening yourself up to this type of waste.

Interesting thought there Pankaj Prasad Prasad. I believe it is the pure physicality of the work environment that makes core engineers the way they are. Work environment makes them more tactile in their interactions. You too would have noticed how after a gruelling annual turn around all you want is unwind before getting on with running and maintaining the process. I don’t think creating content is considered sin in technical disciplines but the acutely hierarchical setup does make things little bit harder. But yes as much as things are changing for the better, youngsters like you should come out more often and express their thoughts of which there’s so much in industry. Also industry as the producer of value is the point of consumption of all the content that there is; be it supply chain, marketing, technology, marketing, sales, work life synergy, hierarchy. I sometimes think myself akin to a farmer. Only difference is the farmer tills the land and we technology. Makes sense?
Core Engineers are a storehouse of information. Yet they are reluctant to share their thoughts. You won't find a lot of electrical engineers creating content on LinkedIn. Public sector employees who talk about abstract concepts like motivation, life, and failures are even more rare. When I started writing publicly, I was not sure whether it was good for me or bad for my career. Although it has increased my visibility across social media, it has not helped me in my career. Creating content is a sin in core technical discipline. Unless you become a celebrity, you will be laughed at for your contents. Your colleagues won't engage with your posts. They scroll through them just like they scroll through reels and shorts. Core people need not just follow standard operating procedures (SOP) for life, they can add some creativity to life. They need to be vocal in this media-dominated world, otherwise the world would be taken over by extroverted people who are not as hard working as mechanical/electrical/civil/chemical engineers who are building the real world. P.S. An entirely unrelated photo for the algorithm.

It often seems like the options available to mechanical engineers when selecting careers are endless. MEs design and develop, maintain and optimize, and because of their experience, skills, and expertise, they work in situations that many in the general public will never have a chance to see or experience. The following are five examples of engineers going to places that few of us will ever be allowed to witness. https://lnkd.in/eMqEJiFu
