🌍 Our commitments towards a sustainable future How can we create floors, walls & finishes, while preserving our planet? The answer? Our "We Care, We Act" policy. Through this sustainable development policy, we have put in place a number of commitments to reduce our carbon impact by 2025. Focusing on 5 of our major daily actions: 1️⃣ The quest for zero carbon: We have been deploying solar panels on many of our factory sites. Our products travel the roads in natural gas trucks. Over 50% of products sold are manufactured locally on each continent. 2️⃣ Recycled content in our products: Nothing is lost, everything is transformed! We give materials a second life by incorporating recycled content into our new products. Our sample cards are recycled too! 3️⃣ Recycling target: We are working towards "zero waste" factories. With our "Second Life" and "ResiLoop" programs. Your old floors become tomorrow's raw materials. 4️⃣ Glue-Free installation products: Gerflor offers 30 product ranges that can be laid freely without adhesive. This means less glue, less CO² and more opportunities for re-use. 5️⃣ Biobased content: We are developing and researching more and more biobased ingredients that combine performance and respect for the environment. Because preserving the environment is one of our top priorities, we keep searching for solutions that promote sustainable development. Before the advent of plastics, humanity lived in perfect harmony with nature, and all waste was 100% recycled, right? Or not??? Look at the picture: it is Monte Testaccio, an artificial mountain in Rome. Spanning 1 kilometer in circumference and standing 35 meters high, this hill is made up entirely of... pottery shards. Shards of over 25 million (!) discarded amphorae. These amphorae, used for transporting olive oil or wine from rural Italy to Rome, were, in fact, single-use (!) containers that were broken and discarded after the products were consumed. Probably, ancient Romans were not that happy with these piles of shards near their homes. But did they try to ban… clay to avoid this single-use amphora packaging? Of course not! They used much simpler measures. Firstly, they made dumping the residual pottery waste in dedicated places like Monte Testaccio, and the punishment for violators was severe. Secondly, they utilized significant amounts of pottery shards as construction materials. The same should be done with plastic waste nowadays. We only need to use modern approaches and technologies. We need to make waste collection—any waste, not only plastic!—as simple as possible. Infrastructure should be extensive, and the incentives—positive or negative—for proper collection should be significant. This will allow all waste to go to waste bins, not to streets, woods, rivers, and oceans. Also, we need to promote advanced recycling techniques like #gasification, #pyrolysis, #solvolysis, and others. These methods dismantle waste into simpler structures: monomers, molecules, or even individual atoms. These can then be reassembled into new materials, such as sustainable fuels, chemicals, industrial gases, or electricity. It is much easier than changing people's habits back to the Stone Age. *Chetwoods Materials Monday* Today, we’re shining a light on PLATIO solar pavers. These walkable panels harness solar energy through high-performance solar cells encased in durable, anti-slip glass panels. A key feature of these pavers is their recycled plastic base, which PLATIO say is made from plastic waste that cannot be recycled by other methods. According to their website, each square meter recycles the equivalent of 400 PET bottles. Apparently, using PLATIO instead can result in substantial embodied carbon reduction too, saving approximately 25 kgCO2e per square meter when compared to traditional cement pavers. PLATIO say that the product is designed to be 95% recyclable at end of life, and they also implement waste reduction practices throughout the production process. For example, wooden containers are used for storing and delivering products, and customers can return these for reuse. PLATIO pavers can be installed in areas unsuitable for conventional solar technology, turning any sunny flat surface into a source of clean energy. They also contribute to the European Council’s Green Pact goals and support sustainable development by promoting affordable, clean energy, sustainable cities, and climate action. #EarthDay is near and dear to our heart here at Hall's Culligan. 🌎 The theme this year is "Planet vs. Plastics," and in case you haven't heard, it's wildly important.
