Smaller health systems typically complete their installations within nine to twelve months, while larger health systems may take 16 to 18 months for their initial go-live. The core process of configuring, testing, and training remains consistent across both smaller and larger installations. Change management and training play a crucial role, and larger implementations often roll out by geographic markets. I may never get another job as an Epic EHR analyst after what I post, but I am a truth teller and seeker. In my occupation Healthcare IT/Epic EMR analyst and trainer, I am seeing these jobs for Epic asking for "certification". Something I did fine without for 15 years. When I look at the salary they're offering, (75-95K MAX.) I have to ask myself "Are they looking at the current salaries for a certified analyst?" The average starting wage in 2016 (8years ago) with certification, was 86k! Last time I looked in 2023 it was 130K. Heck... meet me in the middle, with a little sugar on top, and I'll work for you. My Experience and expertise in almost every Epic application (many of these jobs only want 1 specific module) makes me perfectly positioned to jump right into your organization, with little training. Is it a good thing to have Epic certification? Of course, some certs include building, even though a lot of these jobs aren't asking for build experience, but that's no assurance you'll get an employee that's proficient in what's really important. 1. Can they train? Trust me it's a gift... not every certified or non-certified trainer has the ability to train. Half of my job as an IS Relationship Management, Analyst was picking up the pieces of a poorly executed training. 2. Probably more important is customer service/satisfaction. We sent surveys after training and the last headache a manager needs are bad reviews. My Team was great! (most of them were not certified, only 2 of 8) and this was at Texas Children’s Hospital, not a small town hospital. 3. Can they talk a customer/End user down off the proverbial ledge when facing Epic issues? Example: "I forgot how to close an encounter and I'm falling behind in my charting!" or one of many other frustrations they may face. I've had residents in tears on the phone, afraid of losing their residency, and my job was to help them refocus. By the end of the call, I was able to show them a quicker and easier way to do the workflow, as well as a path to follow to avoid this mistake in the future.
