It reflects and reveals our society, enhances meaning in our civic spaces, and adds uniqueness to our communities. Public art humanizes the built environment. It provides an intersection between past, present, and future; between disciplines and ideas.

📢 Call For Applications: Community-Run Public Art Microgrant Program 2023 @ Calgary Arts Development 📢 Calgary Arts Development invites community-run organizations, including informal groups that define themselves in terms of distinct communities, neighbourhood associations and non-profit organizations or charitable organizations in Calgary/Mohkinsstsis to apply for the Community-Run Public Art Microgrant Program 2023. The Program provides funding to hire local artists and create public art in their neighbourhoods. Communities are required to team up with local artists at any level of experience to explore any form of public art in any part of the city. Projects must address one of the following five themes: Foster Truth & Reconciliation, Art for Social Change Uncover little-known stories about the city or overlooked histories, Explore stories of your community, or Bring beauty, joy, whimsy and hope. I appreciate Alex Freeman for sharing this article about the history of non-profits arts funding. https://lnkd.in/g6sdFuD7 The funding of non-profit performing arts continues to be a challenge across the US, precisely because of the spectrum of attitudes towards the arts, "declining leisure time, slippage in middle class prosperity, and the constant pressure of new entertainment technologies..." Not to mention, it is convenient to travel to other arts destinations like New York, Santa Fe, etc--places where the communities have invested heavily into their arts identity. In most US cities and communities, we are less that one generation from seeing our cultural, visual, and performing arts disappear. You see this in the ethnic European cultural arts first. Many communities have lost their cultural identity due to lack of interest, lack of participation, or replacement by something more contemporary--like sports or competitive dance culture. The entities that continue to thrive are those who established endowments to carry them through difficult times and that have individuals and groups that are dedicated to promoting and presenting the arts.

We share concern about changes to Arts Council England’s policies for regularly-funded organisations – new cautions about activity that is - done by individuals 'in a personal capacity' - 'overtly political or activist' - 'likely to be in breach of your funding agreement' As the Arts Council acknowledges, freedom of expression is essential for a thriving cultural sector in this country. So too is the 'arm's length principle' that ensures public money for the arts is given independently of government, allowing for pluralism and challenge. It has always been part of an artist’s job to question, disturb and be a thorn in the side of established ideas. The UK's tradition of arts funding follows an arms-length principle that is designed to interfere with that vital role as little as possible. The Charity Commission has robustly upheld charities' right to engage in political activity, even where this risks triggering controversy. We hope Arts Council England can do the same for those it funds, and be supported in this by the Government. We all benefit, as do the arts, from a more open and expressive democracy and society.
