📣 This special edition of the State of the Insurers publication series provides an analysis of the primary Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) disclosures reported by four Dutch insurers. Key takeaways include: 🌱 Insurers continue to be committed to reducing emissions and managing environmental risks in its own operations, investment and insurance portfolios. Whilst a decline in emissions from 2019 to 2020 was largely driven by COVID-19, small increases in emissions have been observed as business activities have resumed. There also appears to be a shift towards green bonds as insurers aims to align their investment portfolio with climate goals. 🤝🏻 Insurers continue to push ahead with their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) agenda but there is still room to address broader topics that fall within the DEI topic. Whilst it is no surprise that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a key enabler in the Insurers’ efforts to enhance the experience for consumer and end users, Insurers have largely focused on socially responsible investments and financial wellbeing initiatives for their affected communities. 🏛️ ESG is well embedded as part of the Insurers’ governance - from specialised committees to ESG-based compensation at Executive Boards - but opportunities remain to further integrate sustainability across all levels in the organization. ‼️ Comparability across the insurers’ ESG disclosures remains a challenge, due to inconsistent application of methodologies, data quality & availability issues and variability in the level of details provided. Transparency and improvements in comparability are expected to be accelerated from the fast approaching deadline of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) Click the link to find out more:

Financial sector actors such as banks are increasingly aligning with global net zero commitments such as the goals of the Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA), which is dedicated to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 in line with the Paris agreement. The financial sector is currently grappling with multi-dimensional and multi-layered challenges. On the one hand, they are expected to expand their capabilities on measuring financed emissions, establish a robust climate data infrastructure and offer new services and products, and on the other hand they have to strengthen customer relationships and support their transition as well. At KPMG we provide bespoke services to help FIs in developing an end-to-end decarbonization strategy, leveraging our repertoire of tools and datasets to ensure the delivery of scientifically sound assessments and strategies.
