International Women's Day 2024 is an opportunity not only to celebrate women, but to fight against inequality. This inequality is starkly presented in Victoria’s criminal justice system, where women—particularly First Nations women—are severely overrepresented. Indigenous women are 21 times more likely to go to prison than non-Indigenous women and are incarcerated at an alarming rate, with First Nations women being the fastest-growing cohort of Australians in prison. The Torch recently participated in the Keeping Women Out of the Justice System study, which found that the majority of women in prison are victims of abuse, leading to mental and physical health issues, drug and alcohol use, homelessness and financial insecurity. It found that many women in custody are low risk offenders on short sentences or are held unsentenced on remand. But even a short period of incarceration can have a devastating effect on First Nations women who are at risk of losing their children, homes, jobs and connection to community—factors which all contribute to repeat offending. So what can be done to break this cycle? We know that programs like The Torch strengthen First Nations women’s self-esteem, confidence, connection to culture and community. You can also show your support for the women of The Torch by purchasing or licensing an artwork and sharing this post with a friend. "You know how things happen for reason and how I had to do jail and I had to do a long sentence. The seven years gave me plenty of time to do lots of healing and as a result it was just convenient as well to chip away at my artwork and accumulate a deposit for a home loan." - Stacey Edwards, Taungurung/Boonwurrung peoples https://thetorch.org.au/

The “Webs of Safety and Care” framework looks at safety and care of activists and defenders in a holistic way. This means the framework looks at women, trans, and non-binary defenders not only as activists and defenders, but also recognises any other roles or identities they hold. The framework has four specific lenses under which the overall risks and threats faced by defenders may be categorised: 💖 health and well-being, 👩⚖️ legal and political protection, 💸 economic viability and sustainable livelihood 🫂 social and cultural support. The different lenses allow activists and defenders to reflect on their lives beyond their identity activists and defenders, especially on how their other identities also impact on their safety, care and well-being. More about our Webs of Safety and Care here: https://lnkd.in/d-kxX92i 📅 Apply by 15th June 2024!

It's truly disheartening to see the recent actions taken by the House to tack on culture war amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The House Armed Services Committee dedicated significant time and effort to address crucial quality of life issues affecting our servicemembers. They listened to senior enlisted leaders from each service, aiming to improve the lives of those who defend our nation. Instead of respecting this bipartisan effort, some House members chose to derail the measure with amendments that have nothing to do with national security. These amendments, which aim to deny medical care and dismantle offices dedicated to fighting discrimination, are a slap in the face to those who have put their lives on the line for this country. Military service has always been a pathway for marginalized and disadvantaged communities to prove themselves and earn their way into the middle class. Now, Republicans are working to shut these doors of opportunity, hurting those who serve our nation with honor and courage. It doesn't matter if you agree with someone's lifestyle. If they've served in the military, they've earned the right to live their life as they see fit. It's disgraceful that politicians are using the NDAA to push a divisive agenda that undermines the very people who make our freedoms possible. These servicemembers deserve our respect, our support, and the resources they need to thrive. They should not be pawns in a political game. As a country, we stand for liberty, justice, and the pursuit of happiness. It’s appalling to see political points scored at the expense of servicemembers, veterans, and military families. This behavior is not only shameful but a betrayal of our national values.
