Strong Towns is about building cities that are safe, liveable and financially resilient through re-examining policies around land use, urban planning, housing, transportation and transparent municipal accounting. Saskatoon is in a very precarious place - high debt, looming property tax increases and, well, to put it bluntly, spending more than we earn. Something has got to change, and soon. We have recently brought together a dynamic group of investors for an incredible initiative called Reimagining Opportunities for Investment (ROI) in the South. The focus: creating a sustainable investment ecosystem for undercapitalized communities of color in the Deep South. 📍 A special stop on this journey was the vibrant city of New Orleans, rich in history and culture. Investors delved into its unique blend of African, Native American, Latinx, Asian American and European influences, understanding the need for a collaborative approach to avoid repeating historical disparities. New Orleans is not just a city; it's a hub of entrepreneurial talent and opportunity. However, it faces lingering inequalities. While businesses owned by people of color are on the rise, they receive only 2% of the city's receipts. This inequity underscores the urgent need for collaborative and inclusive investments. The ROI in the South session highlighted key insights from local leaders like Christy Slater, Lamar Gardere and Judy Reese Morse. Their perspectives emphasized the necessity of inclusive economies and nurturing entrepreneurs of color. Looking ahead, ROI in the South will explore sectors like reentry and agriculture, offering more avenues for transformative investments. I see hope in small cities filled with brave councils who prioritise life before profit and dare to put radical innovation to the test. The last century has been one with an enormous focus on global scale - global production, global profits, global solutions and global social media. The scale of possibilities, dreams, fear, dangers and crises is so vast that it’s easy to feel completely overwhelmed as a normal human being just trying to cope with everyday life. However, during the last few years I’ve seen hopeful actions from small scale municipalities who don’t shy away from putting the safety of future generations before short term profit and traditional mindsets. One of the biggest challenges our growing communities face is a simple one. They don’t know they are growing. In our research in rapidly changing cities across Australia, one in two people we surveyed were unaware of upcoming growth in their area. Only 15% had participated in urban change discussions in the past three years. Introducing communities to upcoming growth is the first and crucial step in preparing them for change. We are producing videos like the one below to enable councils to help their communities learn about this growth. Each is tailored to a specific LGA’s growth numbers and change priorities.
