July is Minority Mental Health Month and we are always excited to share (and reshare) with you an inspiring and thought-provoking TEDx talk by our CEO and Founder Dr. Chante Meadows. She delves into the critical topic of mental health in the Black community, which is why we reshare it. In her talk, Dr. Meadows addresses the unique challenges faced by the BIPOC community and highlights the importance of open conversations, support, and resources for mental well-being. “Evidence suggests that people from Black Asian and Minority Ethnic communities are at higher risk of developing a mental health problem in adulthood. But they’re less likely to receive support for their mental health.” Do you see the support gap? Compared to 17% of White Brits, 23% of Black or Black British people will experience a common mental health problem in any given week. Despite this, black adults have the lowest mental health treatment rate of any ethnic group at just 6%, whereas white adults are at 13%. (Mind) Creating an encouraging, safe and inclusive space for black adults to be able to speak openly about their mental health without fear of judgement, breaking down the stereotypes surrounding mental wellbeing in black and ethnically diverse groups and helping them find routes to get mental health support can be impactful on their journey to recovery or dealing with the day-to-day effects of mental health. How to start advocating for our 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡'𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡? First, we need to 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 and 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠. Let's show them that 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 and 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 from a young age. Let's set an example by caring for ourselves, more than just telling them (but both are important.) 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲, 𝐯𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 are some of the best tenets that we can share with them so that not only do we advocate for them, but they know how to advocate for themselves as they learn and grow into adulthood. A mental health crisis has gripped our youth over the past few years, partly due to the increase in awareness of society. that younger generations have today. They are dealing with and processing so much generational trauma and trying to find their way in a world that hasn't been easy. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨, given a voice, and given better standards than we have previously expected. As we wrap up this month's #MentalHealthAwareness campaign, let's shine a light on mental health in Black communities. Today, across our nation, more than seven million Black and African American individuals are living with a mental health condition such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. At PCA America, we are committed to addressing mental health in all communities, especially communities of color.
