We are so grateful for July guest storyteller Cecily Mitchell-Harper, LMSW-SIFI, for her insights on the profound and often overlooked effects of racial trauma experienced by black women in our newest blog, “Black Women’s Wellbeing Matters: Healing the Soul Wound of Racial Trauma.” An important part of becoming trauma-informed is being aware and accommodating to the trauma of others that we ourselves may not experience. We greatly appreciate learning the perspectives of others as we continue to grow the network. Learn more about Cecily’s reflections and healing journey below. ⬇️ #traumainformedcare #mentalhealth #blackmentalhealth #blackmentalhealthmatters

It’s 2024!!!! Let’s start the year off right ! 📢 Calling all agencies and universities who work with social workers and therapists! 🌟 One topic I'm incredibly passionate about is engaging Black Men in therapy and promoting the recruitment and retention of Black Men in Social Work. As a result, I now use my therapist skills to help teach and mentor students and supervisees on the power of self-care, wellness, and task prioritization. ⚡️ In order to create clinically sound and ethical social workers, it's crucial that we prioritize our own self-care, personal wellness, and mental health. After all, how effective can we be if we're exhausted and burnt out? ❓ Think about it this way: you wouldn't drive a car if you were sleep-deprived, right? In fact, two states even give out tickets for such behavior. 💡 This also challenges the healthcare systems we operate and also how we practice social work. 👀 🌐 If you're looking for assistance with your employees in the new year, reach out to me at https://lnkd.in/gcJcXzJc. Let's work together to foster a culture of well-being and success. 📚 And for all the academia and social work students out there, I highly encourage you to connect with us at the Brothas in Social Work Collective. Reach out at [email protected] or visit www.uphold318.com/biswc. Let's create a supportive network and empower each other to make a lasting impact! Check out this week's latest blog that explores supported decision making in everyday practice. #decisionmaking #mentalcapacity #mca #rights #autonomy #inclusion #support #blog #bestpractice
An interesting, but perhaps underdiscussed topic in England and Wales, is that of supported decision making to enable informed choice and consent. Following a the release of a systematic review paper on this matter in Mental Health by Frances, Johnson and Wilson (2024), we felt inspired to start digging into this topic a little bit closer, more blogs to come: 'Within the realm of Mental Capacity, when we talk about ‘supported decision-making’, this refers to any form of assistance given within the decision-making process. This may include the provision of relevant information, or even providing education around a topic to help someone make a choice. Whatever amount of support is provided, it should be completely impartial and should not be leading in any way, even if we have our own personal views on whether a particular decision is a ‘good idea’.' #supported #decisionmaking #mentalcapacity #autonomy #rights #inclusion #personcentred #bestpractice #blog https://lnkd.in/escYPWPa

Most Mental Health services designate 'champions' or 'special interest groups', fostering a facade of inclusivity. Consider this deeply. These groups often allocate a mere 2 hours monthly, addressing issues like perinatal care or 'BAME' concerns. Yet, in reality, these services perpetuate othering by relegating non-white individuals to the sidelines. Protected groups, facing numerous barriers, struggle to access essential support. While these groups fall under the umbrella of 'EDI', services tout them on websites as a cause for celebration. But true celebration only follows when we've constructed bridges, implemented concrete strategies, and showcased systematic change. Why do we permit organizations to tout diversity without actual diversity in their workforce, referrals, or vision? Why is this status quo accepted without challenge? Ethically can I claim what I don’t do?

Canopy Mental Health & Consulting is hosting a therapy group for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color working professionals ages 25+ who have experienced Racialized Work Trauma. Join us for two sessions where we define and explore “racial work trauma” and how white dominant culture has perpetuated racial stereotypes, discrimination, and racist practices in the workplace. Our hope is to create a space where BIPOC professionals can show up as themselves and openly discuss the harm and trauma that takes place at work. We will center the voices and experiences of Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color as we identify and discover pathways to collective healing. We invite working professionals in the helping fields, such as medical or mental health professionals, social workers, case managers, crisis workers, or those individuals who have faced micro/macro aggressions at work. The cost for this group is $40 per session. A $20 deposit is due with registration, and remaining payment will be collected at the time of service. Learn more and register at: canopymhc.com/groups. #blackmentalhealth #racismatwork #racialtrauma #mentalhealth

Empowering individuals with invisible conditions and helping organizations create disability-inclusive workplaces through education, advocacy, and strategic consulting.
Do you have a community of people around you who listen without trying to “fix your health condition?” Through Invisible Condition, I have heard many people say they don't have a community of people who understand what it's like to live with a non-apparent health condition. My friend Natasha Ghosh, founder of Dig Deep Counselling and I decided to host an event called "Community Gathering" — a space without agendas and advice! It's a time to support those of us who'd like to ask questions, share, listen, and support. It’s not uncommon to feel isolated due to our invisible conditions, disabilities, or personal struggles and it’s often hard to find a place to connect and be understood is invaluable. If you live with an invisible (non-apparent health) condition and often feel fear, shame, misunderstood, or unheard, we'd love to have you join! It's 60 minutes on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at noon PT (3 pm ET). https://lnkd.in/gUZGaY5G For me, having a community of people who understand what it's like to live with something not obvious from the outside has helped me beyond words. If you are struggling to find a community or perhaps you have a community and want to share and support, please consider joining us! #disabilityinclusion #community #invisiblecondition
