Did you know that insects are vital to our biodiversity? Last week marked my first day at Hempel A/S, and it was anything but ordinary. Instead of the usual office induction, I joined my new colleagues in Hempel’s leadership team on a trip to the Hempel Foundation’s rewilding projects, Saksfjed Vildmark - one of Denmark’s largest and most ambitious nature restoration initiatives. Witnessing firsthand the impactful work of the Hempel Foundation was truly inspiring and has left me more motivated than ever to dive into my new role. Thank you to Jens Thorving Andersen and Thor Hjarsen for being such fantastic hosts and guides.  On day two, I had the pleasure of touring our R&D facilities, where I felt right at home back in a lab coat. 😉 A big thank you to Camilla Wiese Holmberg, Carolina Figueroa, Agatha Ozturk, and Stefan Møller Olsen for the warm welcome. I’m excited about all that lies ahead at Hempel and looking forward to meeting in the coming weeks with more colleagues, our customers and our suppliers! Now, back to the importance of insects. These essential creatures are crucial pollinators, supporting entire ecosystems by helping plants reproduce. In Denmark, where much of the land is used for agriculture, housing, or infrastructure, natural habitats for bees, beetles and butterflies are under threat. The restoration of the wilderness at Saksfjed is creating ‘safe spaces’ for insects and other wildlife. Get inspired by “Muvuca," a direct seeding method for ecological restoration, inspired by mother nature and traditional indigenous knowledge, promoted by our strategic partner Instituto Socioambiental. Muvuca involves planting a diverse mix of native seeds simultaneously to mimic natural regeneration, offering efficient and cost-effective restoration, see article below. As you can read, the method is not only ecologically beneficial, cost-effective, and scalable, it also significantly reduces the time and cost of restoration compared to traditional sapling planting. Above, muvuca's success hinges on a strong community-based native seed supply chain, known as Redário de redes de sementes, seed Networks, which supports indigenous and traditional communities, promotes conservation, and enhances socio-economic resilience. The Xingu Seed Network (ARSX), an initiative seeded and accelerated by Good Energies Foundation, won the prestigious UNDP Equator Prize for large-scale ecological #restoration. The amazing muvuca story contains invaluable lessons. By making #nature investable through collaborative partnerships, improved technologies and innovative nature financing mechanisms, impact can be delivered at multiple levels, allowing communities and key stakeholders to harness nature's true value and access financial support that can transform landscapes and lives. As we explore innovative nature-based solutions to address climate change, it is imperative to emphasize and develop the role and responsibilities of communities and groups that are not only vulnerable to shifting climatic patterns, but also those dependent on nature for everyday existence. Above all, my gratitude to our strategic partners at Instituto Socioambiental, for providing compelling evidence that natural ecosystem restoration is not merely a act of charity, but a compelling investment in our planetary foundation! 🙏🏾🌍🌳

EPR has been working with Hampton Estate to support the development of an ambitious biodiversity strategy aimed at bringing about ecological restoration and enhancement to the landscape at #PuttenhamCommon, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Last year the first herd of cattle in 80 years was reintroduced to Puttenham Common to replicate historical livestock grazing once carried out by commoners. The act of grazing, alongside selective tree and scrub removal, marks a crucial step in the restoration of the common. As part of the wider Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) strategy for the estate that goes beyond the common, the amount and type of Biodiversity Units that could be delivered for BNG markets has also been assessed and estimated by EPR. These units are now available for sale to developers as the estate shifts into an even more ecologically-orientated approach to its business. Ben Kite, Group Strategy Director at EPR, said: “The restoration work at Puttenham Common has the potential to revive lost heathland, acid grassland and bog habitats that we now know must once have been biodiversity-rich in this area – a critical initiative given the alarming 85% loss of lowland heathland across the UK in the last 200 years. Sustainable Finance for Tiger Landscapes Conference, April 22-23, Bhutan. Next week, the Royal Government of Bhutan is hosting the Sustainable Finance for Tiger Landscapes Conference under the patronage of Her Majesty The Queen, Jetsun Pema Wangchuck. Co-organised by the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Tiger Conservation Coalition, the Conference will aim to mobilize US $1 billion in new funding over 10 years for the conservation of tiger landscapes, which are vital to maintaining biodiversity and sequestering carbon. The Tiger Conservation Coalition brings together leading biologists and experts in wildlife crime, human-wildlife coexistence, policy, finance, development and communications, with unprecedented alignment on achieving tiger conservation at scale As the world’s largest cat and an apex predator, tigers are a keystone species and play a disproportionately important role in controlling the structure and function of the ecosystems on which humans and wildlife rely. An online meeting rich in contributions and indications of solutions based on an exchange of professional experiences between participants and project developers. This is how we can define the second event in the Project Acceleration Series, which took place on 26 June and featured two Brazilian projects: "Formas da Natureza - sustainable crafts that protect the Atlantic Forest" and "Cheiros e Saberes da Mata Atlântica: drop by drop we can change the world!". The collaborative participation dynamic launched during the event to support, incubate and accelerate innovative and sustainable projects stimulated contributions. The developers of the two projects based on forestry and sustainable agriculture in traditional communities such as indigenous peoples, quilombolas and family farmers were able to learn about new ways and opportunities to boost and continue their projects. Upscaling marine forest restoration: challenges, solutions and recommendations from the Green Gravel Action Group - Frontiers in Marine Science: Introduction: To counteract the rapid loss of marine forests globally and meet international commitments of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the Convention on Biological Diversity ‘30 by 30’ targets, there is an urgent need to enhance our capacity for macroalgal restoration. The Green Gravel Action Group (GGAG) is a global network of 67 members that are working on the restoration of a diverse range of macroalgal forests and it aims to facilitate knowledge exchange to fast-track innovation and implementation of outplanting approaches worldwide.

This is a fascinating piece of research and a worthy read. It considers human footprint alongside historic and current herbivore/carnivore abundance and derives land clusters that present maximum opportunity for active or passive eco-system restoration, and potential for protection that would align with 30x30 targets. "In Europe, we found that nearly 25% of the continent (roughly 117 million ha: 36.7%, 12.9%, and 50.4% for meso-, macro-, and mega-rewilding ecosystems, respectively) holds potential for rewilding. Today we are celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity. 🌱 #Biodiversity is one of the most important assets characteristics on our planet. It encompasses the various spectrum of habitats, ecosystems, plant, and animal species. Biodiversity is not only an important basis for life, but also serves as a benchmark for the quality of a habitat in a particular area. At E.ON, we are actively committed to the preservation of biodiversity. We have implemented numerous projects in our E.ON business units to protect the environment and biodiversity: From a species protection project for wild bees and other insects at the LEW site in Königsbrunn to an urban gardening project with fruit varieties and a wildflower meadow at Westenergie in Essen – from the design of multi-layered biotopes, consisting of deadwood piles, nesting mounds and wetland hollows in many substations across the Group to creating a biotope through coppicing at the E.ON headquarter, these are just a few examples of how we support and promote biodiversity in many areas of our company. 🐝 🌻 #InternationalDayforBiologicalDiversity

🐝 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 & 𝗕𝗡𝗚🦇 Day 2 of the deadwood habitat creation project today at FPCR . When we think of creating new habitats, the focus often goes to planting new trees and nurturing new habitats. But deadwood also plays a critical role in supporting biodiversity. 🐁🦉🪱🪳🪲🐜🦋🐞 As we shift toward development projects that deliver #BiodiversityNetGain, deadwood created during site clearance becomes a valuable resource. Incorporating deadwood features in newly created habitats can help developers meet their BNG targets by: 🌳Enhancing habitat quality: Standing deadwood introduces structural diversity and complexity, which supports a greater variety of species and contributes to an increase in biodiversity. This is specifically a component of the woodland #ConditionAssessment. Including standing and fallen deadwood can increase your #BNG score. 🌳The new definition of #VeteranTrees brought in by the Biodiversity Gain Requirements (Irreplaceable Habitat) Regulations 2024 will bring many more trees into scope due to the reduced complexity of meeting the criteria. Maturity and deadwood are now all that is required to reach #Veteran status. The retention of timber from such trees is likely to be a major component of bespoke mitigation strategies. 🌳Providing a quick boost to biodiversity: While planted trees take time to mature, standing deadwood offers immediate resources for a range of wildlife. Within 10 minutes of finishing the last lot, a kestrel was using them as a perch! 🌳Long-term ecological value: Deadwood is a low-maintenance, long-lasting feature that continues to provide ecological benefits over decades, ensuring sustained biodiversity gains on the site. 🐝We have started the process of drilling 100s of holes into the monoliths to provide features suitable for solitary bees. Creating new habitats shouldn’t just be about the living elements; it’s about fostering a complete and sustainable ecosystem. Working with a 500-year timeline in mind… Lessons from an eco sanctuary working to effectively preserve wildlife with such a Long term perspective. The remarkable benefits of working with such a long-term mission as Zealandia’s: it allows contributing researchers to more easily appreciate the big picture, to focus more on how research gets done, and to even reflect on each person’s individual contributions throughout their life.
