At World Trade Organization #MC13 side session hosted by International Institute for Sustainable Development Trade + Sustainability Hub, I had the privilege to moderate a thought-provoking session on navigating deforestation-free value chains. Panelists delved into the crucial question: How do we equitably distribute the responsibility for change?
We started by acknowledging the stark global disparities in deforestation-free value chains. One key focus was on easing the burden on smallholders in developing nations, who often bear the brunt of forest protection efforts. It was heartening to recognize the resilience of smallholders in these regions, who despite facing daunting challenges such as high-interest rates, have managed to preserve forests.
However, we also highlighted the urgent need for more #multilateral dialogues in reforestation endeavors. Without robust discussions and #collaborative efforts, achieving meaningful progress becomes increasingly challenging. It's imperative that we redefine #regulations to ensure equitable benefits for all stakeholders involved.
This includes advocating for fair compensation for #smallholders who play a pivotal role in effective environmental protection. As the session drew to a close, we addressed queries and shared reflective key remarks. It's evident that by working together and reimagining our approaches, we can build #DeforestationFree value chains that benefit both people and the planet.
Let's continue this important conversation and take concrete actions towards a sustainable future!
