This video is a great example of instinctive recognition as mentioned in Malcolm Gladwell's 'Blink'. The book describes how we appreciate things without conscious thought. Looking at the roof on the right of the video (as it starts) we can see that it is truly historic in construction, more ancient in character even than the rear wing of the building. The front roof is covered with heavy weight Caithness stone slabs. It's very local, it's the original construction, it's complex to do, so it's rare and it's costly. The structure had to be sized to support these slabs, so the roof structure has needed many hours of detailed design to make it work. It had to tie in with the other roof which is slated - again that was the original finish in that part of the building, yet that area is something we might see on many buildings. In a glance the observer can see that the stone roof is a genuine historic feature. You might not consciously realise it, but you know instinctively that the building is true to its heritage. Good for Martin Murray at Dunnet Bay Distillers for committing to this level of refurbishment at Castletown Mill. And good for Historic Environment Scotland for supporting the project. This is a rebuild which is being done for generations to come.
