This past weekend, as the sun set, community came together at Brown's Mart for the Guyugwa (fire in Larrakia) showcase. Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal emerging artists immersed themselves in a 3-day creative workshop before performing for the community in Sunday night’s showcase. Guyugwa was a collaboration between Mayála-Bol and Brown's Mart, and a fantastic way to kick off #NAIDOC Week celebrations by highlighting the passion and creativity of young local artists. It's NAIDOC week, and this year's theme is Keep the Fire Burning: Blak, Loud, and Proud. This years theme focuses on celebrating the cultural resilience of First Nations people, their profound connection to the land and traditions, and their pride in their First Nation identity. "It embodies our purpose, calling us to celebrate and honour the strength and vitality of our cultures." As an organisation, we have been putting to task the recommendations from NAIDOC - here’s three things you can do: - Check your local council for events: https://lnkd.in/dexeVKVM - If you cannot attend an in-person event, here are other ways to participate: Follow and engage with First Nations creators online, attend online events, and watch movies and shows featuring First Nations stories. Learn the traditional names of the land you live on and its owners. - Follow, like and share some cool people who are posting interesting content, here are some of our favourite current and upcoming leaders: https://lnkd.in/gy8U6aks https://lnkd.in/gfmX8dD5 https://lnkd.in/g3_q2HB #NAIDOC24 #BLAK #keepthefireburning #impactinvesting #indigenousknowledges

First Nation Consultant | Community Engagement | Bridging Culture through Business | Project Manager
When your business participates in NAIDOC events, you can feel the incredible spiritual connection First Nation peoples' have with each other. The laughter and conversations you hear in the distance make you smile. Being around mob is like attending a big annual family gathering, where you bump into people you haven't seen for years. (even if it's only been a day or two) The music, dances, and celebrations are experiences that are hard to explain to non-First Nation people, but I think you know what I'm referring to. NAIDOC Week can sometimes prompt businesses to evaluate their engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities. This reflection often reveals a different perspective than what the media portrays and fosters a desire for more of the amazing feeling that comes from being around mob. Businesses start to question: Are we meeting our goals and successfully implementing our Reconciliation Plan? Are we enhancing our Indigenous supply chain? Are we making purposeful and meaningful impacts? Can we do better? If you want to enhance your business’s cultural knowledge, connect more effectively with Indigenous Communities, and expand your Indigenous supply chain, there's only one way to do this. Put your thoughts into action! 'Keep the Fire Burning, Blak, Loud and Proud' by continuing to strengthen relationships and create real opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' and businesses to thrive, succeed, and have more celebrations!! Happy NAIDOC everyone! #NAIDOC #FirstNation #Celebrations #EveryoneInvited

As Australia celebrates NAIDOC Week from Sun 7 – Sun 14 July, let’s take a moment to appreciate the profound history, dynamic culture, and significant accomplishments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. One brilliant example is the 2024 Senior Australian of the Year, Yalmay Yunupiŋu. A teacher and linguist from north-east Arnhem Land, Yalmay has been recognised for her teaching excellence and her efforts to promote cultural language by translating Dr Seuss’s books into her native Yolŋu Matha language. She is among the many Indigenous trailblazers making a real difference in her community. NAIDOC Week 2024 This year’s theme is ‘Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud’ honouring the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture. The organisers explain that this theme was designed to honour the “enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture — with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples”. Why do we celebrate? The origins of NAIDOC Week can be traced back to 1920. What began as a day of protest has transformed into a week-long festivity that honours First Nation’s culture and history. The term NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. To heal the Nation The truth is Australia does not take enough pride in our Indigenous history, especially when Indigenous Australians represent the world’s oldest continuing culture. Now, more than ever, especially in the wake of the failed 2023 referendum to enshrine an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament, we need to take radical action to uplift our fellow Indigenous Australians. As Muslims residing in Australia, we too are “settlers” on this land. Our community spans numerous multicultural groups, and many of us can relate to the distress of colonisation. This shared experience enables us to empathise with Indigenous Australians and understand the devastating effects of dispossession. 🔗 Read More - #naidoc #naidocweek #naidoc2024

The Kleinfelder team took time to acknowledge NAIDOC week and the importance of celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The team participated in events to learn more about First Nations culture, investigated and presented ways to promote and foster increased Indigenous participation in our industry, and incorporated conscious supply changes to our business. All with the aim of learning how to be the best ally we can be. This NAIDOC week we at Kleinfelder continue to make conscious focused changes and challenge ourselves to learn and do more; for we believe even today’s smaller deliberate changes can become the instinctive strides forward of tomorrow. #NAIDOC2024

NAIDOC Week commemorates the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. BG&E stands among over 1,100 organisations committed to reconciliation through the RAP program, a framework supporting the national reconciliation movement since 2006. Through our Reflect RAP, BG&E deepens its understanding and actively contributes to the five dimensions of reconciliation: race relations, equality and equity, institutional integrity, unity, and historical acceptance. By engaging in NAIDOC Week activities like cultural events and initiatives showcasing Indigenous art, BG&E honours First Nations people's heritage and fosters greater cultural understanding within our workplace and the broader community. This commitment lays a robust foundation for future RAPs and reconciliation efforts, playing a pivotal role in advancing Australia's reconciliation journey. “Kunstmuseum Basel, Zeitz MOCAA has created a groundbreaking exhibition that demands to be seen. The exhibition’s title is inspired by the 2019 Netflix miniseries When They See Us by African-American director Ava DuVernay, which focuses on how Black youth are seen as potential criminals and thus as a threat. Replacing “they” with “we” in the title indicates the crucial perspectival shift: The works on show bring into focus the artists’ lived realities as subject of their own art. Amounting to over 200 pieces, the artworks are grouped into six distinct thematic categories entitled “The Everyday,” “Joy & Revelry,” ”Repose,” “Sensuality,” “Spirituality,” and “Triumph and Emancipation.” This multifaceted special exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart introduces viewers to figurative painting by Black artists from Africa and the African Diaspora dating from the 1920s through to the present. Sound stations and atmospheric staging provide complementary contextual elements as aids to interpretation. A multilayered series of public programmes designed in collaboration with external partners provides additional approaches to the exhibition.” mutualart.com When We See Us. AFRICA DAY 2024 – It is heartwarming to see a collection of African artworks on display at the Kunst Museum of Basel Switzerland (Kunstmuseum Basel) this weekend, under the banner of “When we see us”, conceived and organized by Zeitz MOCAA. Several pieces in this exhibition are on loan from the private collection of The Intrepid.’s co-founder Pule Taukobong. Pule’s family's collection consists of over 700 pieces of carefully curated unique African artworks. A number of these artworks are also on display at investee companies and the The Intrepid.’s offices. Take a look at this recent video interview with Pule Taukobong at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town prior to the artworks departing for Switzerland, to glean more insight into the collection.
