M·E·L Research to Deliver Exploratory Research In to Museum Use and Management of Land, Landscapes, Green- and Blue Spaces 🌲 🌳 This initiative is set to explore the multifaceted roles of land ownership, stewardship and management within museums and heritage organisations across the UK, highlighting their impact on community engagement, environmental sustainability, and cultural heritage stewardship. 📋 If you would like to take part or keep up to date on project progress, you can sign-up using the link below. We have been crunching the numbers on the industrial heritage survey that we have been doing for Historic England and The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust. Some headlines from our work so far… - 48% of sites are owned by a preservation trust or society; 25% are in local authority ownership - 45% of sites are accredited museums - On average each site spent £192,163 on repairs and maintenance over the last three years - 53% of sites had found it ‘quite difficult’ to secure public sector funding in the last three years; only 40% had sought sought private sector support - The majority of volunteers are over 65 years old; 74% of sites said they found it ‘fairly difficult’ or ‘very difficult’ to attract new volunteers, and especially young volunteers - Over 40 million people visited independent designated industrial heritage sites during the last three years, the majority of whom were non-specialist family audiences Still lots more to unravel — but a mixed picture, with lots of scope for future development. Public libraries and museums are civic infrastructures normally closed after dark, but with a great potential for reviving the city at night. It's great to see that Rome, the city where I live in, launched a huge plan for opening study halls in several museums and public and university libraries open to students 24 hours a day. Galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAMs) are instrumental in shaping and preserving the cultural identity of societies and fostering a deeper understanding of history, science, and the environment. Moreover, they contribute to the social infrastructure of local communities and visitors, expressing and supporting the active role of culture in society. We are looking forward to collaborating with GLAMMONS in efforts to apply commons theory and advancce practice supporting the resilience and transformative potential of GLAMs in times of change. GLAMMONS objectives are to A. Develop new conceptualizations through the ways that the commons theory and practice can provide a new transformative power for the GLAMS and the local communities, and B. What is "eco-lens" and what does it mean within a museum context? As we learnt in a workshop with Culture Declares Emergency by Victoria Burns, "eco-lens" perspective involves viewing things through the prism of sustainability and environmental impact. Within the context of museum collections, "eco-lens" can be understood as viewing, managing, and interpreting collections with a focus on ecological sustainability and responsibility. Museums need to find links between their objects and ecology, in order to further delve deeper into their discoveries through interpretation. Adopting an eco-lens can also mean being conscious of the ecological crisis at large, as we're interpreting objects and working in museums. The SAVE WHIM MUSEUM Advocacy Group is thrilled to announce that Estate Whim Museum (where I was proud to be their Executive Director for several years) has been chosen as one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places for 2024 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation The National Trust for Historic Preservation unveiled their 37th annual list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, shining a light on some of the nation’s greatest cultural treasures and the threats facing them.   This year’s list exemplifies the National Trust’s continued commitment to telling the full American story, with a diverse array of sites both inside and outside the continental United States. These places mirror the complexities, challenges, and opportunities that have always been part of what it means to be American—and each have stories that are deserving of attention and care.    So far over 350 places have been listed over the life of the program, and only a handful have been lost. Estate Whim Museum, Frederiksted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands  Established during the colonization of St. Croix by Denmark, Estate Whim was a plantation producing cotton and sugar for export. The lives and legacies of those enslaved by plantation owners and those who continued to labor there for meager wages for a century after emancipation are inextricably tied to the site, which now hosts a museum, library and archives, and public programming. Repeated hurricanes have damaged many of Estate Whim Museum’s historic buildings and structures, and the site steward needs support and resources to move forward with repairs. https://lnkd.in/e-wKAFYG
