Cheeky monkeys like these Simeulue Long Tailed Macaques love to eat coconuts. Because of this, farmers will sometimes poison them. Sadly, the macaques are now critically endangered in Simeulue. Coconut farmers can’t be blamed. They are the poorest farmers in Indonesia and are protecting their already limited economic asset and their family wellbeing. Groups like The Long Tailed Macaque Project @theltmproject work tirelessly to protect this species. Without them farmers - and āluān - wouldn’t be aware of their extremely vulnerable state. Couples week ago, Planète Urgence Indonesia and Partner (Pokja Pesisir) with local communities in Babulu Laut - Penajam Paser Utara district did the trial planting from seeds for species Avicennia sp in the estuary of Tanjung Tanah island. This type of species is commonly planted from nursery seeds after growing 3-4 leaves (approximately it takes 3-4 months). Considering the abundance of Avicennia’s seeds in the nature, we try this methods to see the effectiveness of growth comparing the other one (from nursery). There are three different technical approachments; 🌱 Plant the seeds under the paranet 🥅 Spread the seeds behind the paranet 🍃Plant the seeds inside the used plastic cups The use of paranet and used plastic cups is to protect the seeds from the high tides. The festival kicks off with a collective effort to clean the spring. Villagers of all ages wade into the cool waters to remove weeds and silt, ensuring a healthy flow of water throughout the year. Once the spring is cleaned, it transforms into the stage for traditional, sustainable fishing. Using wicker baskets, villagers catch excess fish to maintain the spring’s ecosystem balance. OUR VISION The hill tribe areas of Northern Thailand are breathtakingly beautiful. It has been home to the Akha and Karen tribes for centuries. Neither Thai nor Burmese, they are socially isolated and marginalized. Mostly rice farmers, they are poor since they get only one crop due to the climate and altitude. Most concerning to us, these communities have been shrinking as their children have been leaving for the cities in search of a better life – which they rarely find. Resulting in older and older farmers. How to restore and sustain these communities is the problem we studied. The Vision of Hilltribe Organics is to transform the lives of poor hill tribe communities in Northern Thailand. By transferring knowledge organic agriculture and growing the skill sets of the farmers and their families, we aim to at least double family income and create real and lasting social change and development with the hill tribes. Hilltribe Organics aims to work with existing natural and social eco-systems within the Thai hill tribe areas to offer superior organic products that generate know and income to uplift communities while respecting and preserving their unique way of life.
