CNN took on the task, including everything from fried okra to eggs benedict to poke. BopSpotter - a phone on a pole in San Francisco's Mission District set to Shazam any songs it hears, all day long. It got me thinking about a recent conversation about the many alternate reality games that were popular in the late '90s and early 2000s, like The Beast, a massive online game developed to promote the movie AI. In the article "The Elite College Students Who Can't Read Books," I learned that in 1976, 40% of high school seniors said they had read at least 6 books for fun in the last year, while 11.5% hadn't ready any. By 2022, the percentages had flipped. At a time when algorithms confirm our opinions and boredom is a foreign idea because TikTok is always at our fingertips, reading books to challenge ourselves (and grow), develop empathy for other perspectives and experiences, dive deep into texts to promote discovery and connect unwieldy ideas, and simply get lost in another world (its own form of self care) is more important than ever. If you're running a just-in-time pizza operation and your salami is in short supply, overstocking the margareta labels is a low risk packaging strategy.
