How can regular exercise help us in the workplace? For good overall health, exercise has to be part of our routine. Not only do physically active employees have a stronger immune system, they focus more easily, cope with stressful situations better, resulting in less sick days, improved productivity, creativity, decrease work related stress, meaning a happier, healthier workforce. Here are 5 major reason to encourage regular exercise among our workforce: - Improve sleep quality - Maintain a healthy bodyweight - Improve cardiovascular function and muscular strength - Lower blood pressure - Reduce risk of developing illnesses like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and heart disease. There are many ways to encourage more activity with things like standing desks, walking meeting, bike storage facilities, flexible working hours as well as education. If you haven't already, now is the time to look at how we can all include and encourage more movement for our health and the health of our workforce.

“Challenges don't define us. How we respond to them often does” Lerner, M. (2024). I have a picture in my mind of a frustrated person with a phone in their hand speaking to a chatbot that didn’t give an answer they wanted after prompting it. How do we react? Throw the phone out the window? LOL. That’s what you feel like doing, right? In Lerners (2024) article he discusses Artificial Integrated Emotional Wellness (AIEW) and focuses on how artificial intelligence can foster emotional well-being. Can developers train their AI agents to be aware, understand, and accept our feelings, and navigate challenges and change, when it’s only a machine? If this is possible, then many may say the machine is sentient and thinking for itself. Could we not be deceived into thinking the chatbot is our best friend? Within the health space maybe this will be of benefit to addressing emotional wellness, taking in the key aspects “1) recognizing and accepting one's own emotions through self-awareness, understanding, and acceptance, and 2) harnessing the power of emotions, particularly those arising from challenges, to propel themselves to achieve emotional wellness”. Lerner (2024). Theses key aspects could teach us how to react when unwanted feelings emerge, helping healing through facing challenges. How is training possible? Artificial Emotional Intelligence training appears to be able to use many theories to train AI on, like Cognitive Therapy. Yes, nonverbal cues, shared experience, history and confidentiality. With AI entering the ‘senses’ space, these things are possible. Let’s respond, with caution to the inevitable challenges and make sure our foundations are rock solid.

I don't think it will come as a surprise to you that our capacity to sustain our attention at work has drastically decreased over the last decade. It’s not as bad as the 8-second goldfish-like attention span that several media outlets reported a while back (this myth has been debunked already), but we are certainly not improving. On average, studies show that workers dip in and out of their inboxes 30 times a day and pick up their phones 1,500 times a week. More than 90% admit to multitasking in the last 30 days (can you relate to this one :-) ?). By losing our capacity to focus and concentrate, we miss out on our intrinsic ability to tap into our creativity, wisdom and experience in ways that can only improve the quality and efficiency of the work we do. It was my absolute delight to spend a whole afternoon with members of the US and UK teams, going over tried-and-tested strategies to help them achieve their ideal performance state.
