Fabulous to see continuing coverage of Batsheva Hay’s unconventional casting decision for New York Fashion Week. The designer chose to only cast models who were over the age of 40. You may be surprised and/or disappointed that this is causing a stir. But considering that the average age of a catwalk model is c23, with some as young as 16, this is a bold move. It’s a brilliant decision, when it comes to increasing representation and diversity in fashion - a world that shapes the expectations and aspirations of many. For too long, women in their mid and later lives have been made to feel invisible by the fashion and beauty industries - and by society at large. This decision is also commercially smart. Women in their 40s generally are earning more than women in their late teens and early twenties. They are more likely to have the means to become a customer, so it makes sense to cast models that make it easier to picture themselves in the clothes. Sometimes, this kind of decision can be criticised as being gimmicky or tokenistic. No cause for that here - the designer is herself a woman in her 40s, and recruited her models via agency but also by stopping beautiful women in their 40s out and about in New York. This show is a genuine expression of a desire for greater representation in the fashion industry. Let's take a second to talk about some seriously iconic people who've changed the fashion game. We're talking about those iconic black models who've rocked the runway. First off, let's talk about Naomi Campbell. She's the queen of the catwalk! Naomi's got this amazing vibe and confidence that's inspired tons of other models. She's not just a model, she's a trendsetter, showing girls everywhere that they can own their unique style and go after their dreams. 💃👑 Then there's Tyra Banks. You've probably seen her on the covers of all the top magazines and strutting her stuff on the Victoria's Secret runway. Tyra's all about breaking barriers and showing that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. With her pretty smile and unstoppable attitude, she's proved that anything is possible. 💁♀️💋 And let's not forget about Beverly Johnson. She was the first black model to ever grace the cover of American Vogue, which is epic. Beverly's grace and elegance changed the game and made space for tons of other models of color to shine. She's a trailblazer, and her impact on the fashion world is huge. 🌹💫 So here's to Naomi, Tyra, Beverly, and all the other models of color out there. They've made the fashion world way more inclusive and diverse, and that's something to celebrate. This weekend, I was catching up on the She's Interesting podcast - started by my friend Rashel Hariri. In recent episode, Rashel discussed #WomensEntrepreneurshipDay and the importance of elevating the voices of women entrepreneurs and business leaders. ✊ So - I thought I would join in and share just a few of the many women I look up to! 👇 💥Cindy Gallop: Her headline says it all. A smart and passionate trailblazer - Cindy constantly reminds me that in order to change the status quo, you need to be vocal and take action challenge the systems that exist in order to maintain it. Her company MakeLoveNotPorn was created with the mission of making it easier for everyone in the world to talk openly and honestly about sex, in order to promote good sexual values and good sexual behavior. 💥Arlan Hamilton - Arlan is the founder of Backstage Capital - a VC firms that focuses specifically on investing in Women, People of Color, and LGBTQIA+ founders. Her story is powerful: she pivoted from music to tech (like me!), and went from being homeless at 25 with no connections to building a firm that has been paving the way for hundreds of underrepresented founders to make it. Her grit and an unending perseverance has been a huge inspiration. And side note: her conference in LA next April looks unreal - line up (so far) includes Rich Paul, Suneera Madhani, Gary Vaynerchuk, and her musical guest - TLC! 😍 💥Vivian Phillips - A mentor, Seattle-icon and all around badass that reminds me every day how cool she is (ex: she interviewed Trevor Noah last week). Vivian was the Director of Marketing at Seattle Theatre Group while I was an intern. She showed me early in my career how effective leaders can create spaces for their teams to thrive and feel supported, while also pushing them to do impeccable work. Vivian is champion of underrepresented artists and is the founder of Arte Noir - a space and community in Seattle's Central District that is uplifts Black art (https://www.artenoir.org/). 💥And last but not certainly not least, Joanna Lord - a brilliant marketer that possesses a unique combination of both range AND depth of expertise in all facets of marketing. Joanna is another person I met early in my career while working at Porch Group. I was in Sales at the time, and she was the VP of Marketing. I remember the first time I met her and being so surprised by her kindness and openness to support. Even well after our time working together, I loved grabbing coffee with her. If you don't feel powerful put on a suit! I am very passionate about women's fashion and the empowerment of women. With all the recent discussions surrounding Kamala Harris and her upcoming role as the new POTUS, I am fascinated by her views, political platform, and personal style. As a stylist with experience in selling designer brands such as Akris Punto, Max Mara, Rag and Bone, and L'Agence at Nordstrom, I believe I have an understanding of the kind of woman she is. One thing that excites me is her promotion of women wearing suits (whether she knows it or not), which is a style I love. It might be because my mother wore a suit when she married my father, she looked both beautiful and strong (maybe it's an Oakland woman thing). Anyway for me, it's great to see women embrace this powerful look. Although my favorite suit brand, Theory, didn't make her list, it was featured in Forbes. According to Forbes, the best suits for women are those that effortlessly blend professionalism with a chic and comfortable style, making it suitable for both work and leisure. After all, no one wants to spend long days in an uncomfortable suit, particularly when it involves meetings, travel, or dealing with unexpected events. Brands and brand founders, take note. Being able to adapt to current shifts and events is essential when it comes to growth. There’s a few reasons/ways this can help you, but in my expertise, these two take the cake… 1. Relevancy. 2. Relatability. New brands are being birthed daily which means more competitors and more of a need to stand out. The brand that remains the most relevant and relatable typically then becomes the most talked about, which means it’s the most top of mind both to your audience, and sometimes to your outliers too. I’m not saying you HAVE to jump on every bandwagon, but when the shift is historical and especially if it’s on brand for you (like denim to country music)… it’s not a bad idea. #FoodforThought #BrandTips #Branding

We have stopped thinking critically and calling balls and strikes. Two things can be true at the same time, and if we approach things based on principle, we can usually have a consistent worldview. Let me start by saying context is everything, and I don't know all of the details, so I am happy to be wrong if my understanding of the current facts proves to be faulty. Should we be celebrating Rihanna expanding into one of the most repressive societies (by our standards) on the planet? China is literally a communist country with very repressive laws that we currently protest against in the US and UK. I've noticed a halo effect trend where some people can do anything, and it is viewed as amazing and great, but if someone we view as counter to our beliefs does the same thing, it's bad. I thought that doing business was a bad thing. I'm confused because we were told for 4 years that ties with China = enemy of the state. I'm not in a place to judge as I don't have full context, but I would say if this is being viewed as a positive thing because this means that a Black Woman is about to 80x her bag, I'm not sure that I am excited. I admire and respect what Rihanna has accomplished through business acumen, BUT that does not mean that she shouldn't be called out if she falls foul of what might be viewed as social responsibility. I'd love to have a better understanding as to why (other than money and the fact that she is a Black Woman) this is something that should be celebrated. Or is that the whole point?
