A simple but very important step in the coaching process is to know what the client wants to create or change instead of what is occurring now. Otherwise, they may lead you in many directions as they talk about their problems and roadblocks with no real movement forward. What does your client what to have happen that is not occurring now? What do they want to explore creating or changing that is possible? What parts of their story do they want to shift as a result of your time together? Establishing what success, a new understanding, or fulfillment would look like and mean for your client is a marker of your success as well. They might not know exactly what they will do to achieve it at the end of your time together, but the picture of what is possible is coming into focus.
