As a bisexual man, my professional journey intertwines with a quest for self-acceptance. Reflecting on my experiences, Audre Lorde's words resonate profoundly: 'It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.' In the attached report from myGwork, it is stated that 36% of students and graduates worldwide identify as LGBTQ+, yet 75% hesitate to be out at work. This highlights the challenges in fostering truly inclusive workplaces. Entering the professional world at 19, I hesitated to express my identity, despite the organisation providing platforms to do so. Authentically being myself was challenging, but personal growth has made navigating these challenges easier. Championing workplace inclusion is crucial, especially for young individuals entering the workforce and still finding their place. Creating environments where authenticity is celebrated is a moral imperative and an investment in the future. Transparent LGBTQ+ inclusive policies, along with increased visibility and support, are just a couple of the ways organisations can empower individuals to thrive in the workplace and within themselves. Whether it's supporting those starting their workplace journey or contributing to organisations becoming more LGBTQ+ inclusive, I believe we can all play a greater part in sparking conversations and actions for a more inclusive workplace. Please join me in doing so. 🌈#InclusionMatters #WorkplaceDiversity #EmbraceYourJourney

The majority of people who are LGBTQ+ have faced discrimination at the workplace, and 1 in 5 choose not to report it. Research by EduBirdie has found that “70% of LGBTQ+ people feel lonely, misunderstood, marginalized, or excluded at work and 59% believe their sexual orientation or gender identity has hindered their careers”. Having access to LGBTQ+ networks and mentors can reduce the perception that being out at work will impact their career progression. [PWC] Real Mentors Network mentors and mentor program support are available to organizations who are committed to creating greater psychological safety and increased sense of belonging for their team members who are part of the LGBTQ+ community.
