Judicial clerkships are exciting opportunities for a lot of law students. They also have a lot of issues with diversity, harassment, and burnout. The power dynamic in the judge/clerk relationship can breed some really toxic situations. Historically, there hasn’t been much transparency around clerkships, which makes it difficult to address those issues. But Aliza Shatzman and The Legal Accountability Project are working to change that. If we can keep clerkships accessible and safe, they can be amazing career paths. But without accountability, clerks may have experiences that cause them to burn out and leave the legal field entirely. If you did a judicial clerkship, please take some time to complete LAP’s survey to increase transparency and help clerks have the best possible experience. #clerkships #law #burnout #accountability

Ever wonder what happens when someone with a record applies for a job? It can feel like stepping onto a tightrope filled with uncertainty and the looming question of whether or not your past mistakes will overshadow your present qualifications. But don’t worry because there's a safety net in place called the Fair Chance Act. Have you heard about it? This act levels the playing field by ensuring that individuals with criminal records aren't automatically written off from job opportunities. Your job is not boring - don't let anyone tell you different. It might be your current role or maybe it's the job you started in, but be grateful. At a time when many have lost jobs, some are working in roles that are "at risk" and others are hoping and praying to be invited for interviews, I'm grateful for starting my legal career in what others might deem a "boring job". I was an Admin Officer (AO), working from one of the many HMCTS Courts in London. No one really asked me what I did because everyone knew what court staff meant (iykyk) I collected the post, opened letters, logged correspondence, prepared court bundles, drafted orders and occasionally dealt with happy/unhappy court users. That "boring job" had me in Court for 2 and a half years and it taught me a few things: 1️⃣ Communication: You learn to deal with people from all backgrounds confidently - litigants, lawyers, judges and members of the public. Equal treatment = respecting people irrespective of why they were in Court that day. 2️⃣ Problem-solving: You learn that Court is just a big room where problems get sorted, whether it is a long standing Chancery dispute or a frightened litigant in person, people just want help/a solution. 3️⃣ Attention-to-detail: You learn that some of the letters/orders you handle could be the difference between someone staying a repossession or a warrant being executed correctly - names, addresses, dates and amounts are double and triple checked. I no longer work in a "boring job", but I am still grateful. That "boring job" was the stepping stone to 5 promotions, 10 years of legal experience, and numerous journeys to Courts around the country, I wouldn't have it any other way. Without that "boring job" I never would have become the Prosecutor I am today. You might not feel like it, but thank God for that "boring job". It might just change your life. #Law #LawyerLife #LLB #LLM #SQE #Solicitor #Barrister #FutureLawyers

President and Founder @ The Legal Accountability Project / Attorney, Advocate & Former Law Clerk / Above the Law Contributor
A judicial clerkship is typically messaged as a "gold star" or a necessary check box for future legal jobs, including at law firms. But how do clerks find those roles? I’m always thinking about ways to make life easier for law clerks. So I’m happy to spotlight one of The Legal Accountability Project's supporters, Lateral Hub, an online job board for lateral attorneys founded by my friend Albert Tawil. Lateral Hub has launched its post-clerkship offering for the 2024 cycle. Judicial clerks can sign up for updates for post-clerkship law firm opportunities based on location. You'll receive an alert each time a new posting goes live on the platform. Lateral Hub is totally free to use: no account is required. Similar to the way historically marginalized law students lack the formal networking connections that help them obtain #clerkships, these disadvantages may persist as they're looking for post-clerkship roles. And what about the many clerks who - following the conventional wisdom that any federal clerkship is worth uprooting your life for a year or two - move to some remote location where they don't plan to live post-clerkship? It's challenging to find your next job, but Lateral Hub wants to make it easier. Lateral Hub is democratizing the job search process. This is a great resource to help clerks find their next role. For fantastic clerks nation-wide who want to relocate post-clerkship, the job search is tough, inefficient, and limited. Not to mention, as a law clerk, you're probably already putting in long hours in chambers, before you turn to job applications! If you're a current clerk looking for your next role, I'd encourage you to check out this resource. #lawfirms #clerkships #careers #LateralHubAttorney
