Have you tried TooGoodToGo? I have really enjoyed this app. Not everyone knows this, but most expiration dates shown on foods indicate the quality of the food, not the perishability of the food. Of course, this is not always the case; expiration dates on perishable items such as meats, poultry, eggs, dairy, etc. do indicate the date you should consume the food. Always follow the Look - Smell - Taste method: does the food look bad? If not, does it smell bad? If not, do a taste test—does it taste bad? This app has been a great source for purchasing less expensive essentials such as bakery bags from Whole Foods, surprise bags from local sellers at farmers' markets, and even whole fresh meals at the end of a restaurant's day. I believe in their mission to reduce food waste, lower carbon emissions, and help local businesses earn money for food they would have otherwise not earned anything on. I've heard it so many times: extending shelf life of chilled ready to eat foods means sacrificing quality. This belief holds back progress that could make our food systems more sustainable.   What if you could have a convenient meal knowing it would taste just as fresh and be of just as good quality on day one as it would on day 25 or even 45...instead of just having 5 days, and that it's hardly edible on day 5!?   I am admittedly a food-tech geek that gets excited about the potential here. "Best By?" "Use By?" "Sell by?" But Why? On today’s episode of Cartside 🛒 Convos, we’re talking with Jimbo’s shoppers about what they think the difference between “best by”, “use by”, and “sell by” is. The USDA estimates that 30 percent of the food supply is lost or wasted at the retail and consumer levels. One source of food waste arises from consumers or retailers throwing away wholesome food because of confusion about the meaning of dates displayed on the label. In an effort to reduce food waste, it is important that consumers understand that the dates applied to food are for quality and not for safety. Food products are safe to consume past the date on the label, and regardless of the date, consumers should evaluate the quality of the food product prior to its consumption. 🚮 A “Best if Used By or Before” date indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality. A “Sell-By” date tells the store how long to display the product for sale for inventory management. A ”Use-By” date is the last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality. It is not a safety date except for when used on infant formula. Manufacturers provide dating to help consumers and retailers decide when food is of best quality and when to enjoy them by. These foods can still be enjoyed after the date, but the flavor, smell or texture may be affected. Except for infant formula, dates are not an indicator of the product’s safety, and are not required by Federal law. It is not unlawful to sell food past the “Sell By” date. Two food sustainability giants just partnered for impact. Too Good To Go & Whole Foods are teaming up. Too Good To Go -- is the world’s largest marketplace for surplus food. They rescue perfectly good food from going to waste, offering deep discounts (50% off or better) on surplus high quality meals & ingredients. Whole Foods Market -- a giant in the world of healthy + sustainable food with 500+ stores in North America and billions in annual sales –  needs no introduction. Together, 450+ Whole Foods Market stores are now offering “surprise bags” of surplus food on Too Good To Go’s app. The partnership is expected to save millions of meals annually, boosting both companies’ sustainability efforts and scaling their impact. Too Good To Go is currently in 27 cities, and this partnership will extend their reach to 24 new states. Meanwhile, this will make Whole Foods Market more accessible, with $9.99 prepared food bags (retail value $30, including a surprise selection of soup, ready-to-eat meals, and/or protein salads) and $6.99 bakery bags (retail value $21, including a surprise selection of bakery items like breads, muffins, and scones). You can snag one of the (four) prepared food bags or (two) bakery bags per store each day – typically the hour before stores close – via the Too Good To Go app. I love this partnership for three reasons: 1) It makes better food more affordable & accessible – in a phrase, it’s sustainability at scale. 2) It overcomes both partners’ weaknesses by focusing on the others’ strengths. 3) It directly addresses our single biggest food sustainability opportunity – food waste. Fast food is a big business Between 2022 and 2023, consumers spent an extra £2bn each year on fast food, growing the market by 10%. Earlier this week, I wrote about the 'chicken-ification' of our UK high streets. As a reminder, Fast food sales in the last year: 🍔 Beef: £1.98bn 🍗 Chicken: £4.45bn That's about £70 for every person in the UK. But value increases are not just driven by changes in consumer behaviour but also by increased distribution. McDonald's has announced plans to add 200 new locations, targeting high-street locations. Making it easier than ever to take a trip to the Golden Arches. Availability + affordability = Acceptance Another reminder that food environments shape our diets. To effectively reshape our Food system, we can't just focus on the supply side; we need to stimulate demand for healthier, more sustainable foods, too.
