What do brick models and punk rock have to do with innovations? And what does the so-called superhero method describe? 🤔 Meet Ludwig Maul, Senior Innovation Coach and one of our brand ambassadors at Bosch Power Tools – and find out more about the topic #UserCentricity. "For me, user centricity means thinking outside the box and finding potential in future technologies and business models for our user groups," defines Ludwig. Visit to the #IWF2024 in Atlanta. We were impressed by the amount of machinery OEMs set up in Halls A and B. They had entire manufacturing shop floors set up by companies like HOMAG, HOLZ HER, CMP, and others to showcase their different woodworking machinery. The pleasing smell of fresh-cut wood was in the air, and all dust was professionally filtered and exhausted. Thanks to Rafael Palij from WK Industrial Services Corp for serving the best Espresso on the show. It was also great to run into Vincent Zimmer from Zimmer Group . 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆? - More and more #automation. The amount of robotics applications ( either six-axis for material handling or three-axis portal for material storage/sorting) is increasing. Issues like labor shortage and skills gap is impacting everyone in #manufacturing. - The big three in the industry all presented their #Digitalization platforms to interconnect all machines on the manufacturing shop floor to get: - efficient production planning - energy optimization - #OEE (Overall Equipment Efficiency) - #Predictive Maintenance and #Digital Services Platforms On the other hand, I see a lot of SMEs still offer machinery and services that are more traditional. ( mainly mechanical solutions, low mechatronic, and software. Traditional Reactive break and Fix Services - no Digital offerings at all. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗼? The fact is that machinery is getting increasingly complex, specifically on the software side of things, and the know-how of field service and maintenance personnel doesn't increase at the same rate. This causes a gap that translates directly into #UnplannedDowntime. The only solution is to use digital tools with Immersive, IoT, and AI technology. Like in your regular toolbox, you must have the right Digital tools. 🔎 Use of Multiphase-Mixed Research Method In the 🚗Automobile Industries all over the World (German & Swedish OEM) in the decision making process when OEMs are facing limitations toward the usage of data-driven methods in designing automobile accessories for example In-Vehicle Information Systems (IVISs), this research method is useful to highlight the limitations and provide recommendations. The development and evaluation of In-Vehicle Information Systems (IVISs) are strongly based on insights from qualitative and quantitative studies which is a Multiphase-Mixed Research Method. IVISs itself is part of an overarching construct consisting of a multitude of subsystems and sensors that are often highly complex software systems in themselves. Therefore, flawless and continuous communication between those systems plays a vital role concerning in-car UX and users’ perception of IVIS. Limitations: 1.    Automotive software platforms are not designed to support the growing needs of data logging. 2.    Strict data protection regulations and the associated internal processes limit data collection and utilization. 3.    The product life cycle is long. 4.    Hardware, software, and UX development activities are poorly aligned. 5.    The possibility to make major Over-The-Air (OTA) updates is missing. 6.    Needs of UX experts about vehicle data utilization. Recommendations: 1.    Increase interdisciplinary collaboration 2.    Introduce agile practices and modernize infrastructure 3.    Incorporate data-based evidence in decision-making processes 4.    Reduce silo mentality and introduce data transparency 5.    Introduce clear technical specifications. "Not a platform if it provides 99.9% of the functionality, is it." was one of the insightful comments from my previous post on how platforms boost innovation "above and below the line": https://lnkd.in/g--_UmyA (HT Jonathon Penberthy) Interestingly, my automotive metaphor extends to exactly that lesson learned. Some companies experimented with "badge engineering" where you would take a lesser model, add all available options, and call it a luxury model, perhaps even under a different brand. This worked so poorly for GM once that it's known as the "Cadillac Cimarron Effect" - no one remembers the car except for this painful lesson learned. For platforms to do their magic, there needs to be room on top of the platform. It is not about "white labeling" or "badge engineering". Those approaches leverage economies of scale, but they fail to boost innovation.
