I think that contributing to teaching at the undergraduate level is crucial for any university researcher as it fosters a dynamic academic environment where knowledge is not only generated but also disseminated. In general, engaging with students allows researchers to refine their communication skills, ensuring that complex ideas are conveyed clearly and effectively. Within the #PRIN 2022 #PNRR #SHIELDED Project (Secure, Trustworthy, and Efficient Federated Learning for Intrusion Detection at the #Edge) I am offering two one-year Research Contracts ("Assegno di Ricerca") at Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca. The candidates must hold a #MSc degree in #Information #Engineering or #Computer #Science; the possession of a #PhD degree is preferred. Salary: around 1500€/month worth net. Starting date: May 1st, 2024. In the following you can find the activity description for the two Research Contracts: RESEARCH GRANT #1: "Definition of efficient feature extraction techniques from network packets for network intrusion detection" The main goal of network intrusion detection strategies is to classify incoming traffic as benign or malicious in a timely and accurate manner. The candidate will leverage the capabilities of next-generation networks to achieve this goal, improving the state of the art in feature extraction from packets traversing network nodes (switches) with programmable data planes using the P4 language, and optimizing the subsequent forwarding of these features to an ML model in the control plane for training and inference stages. RESEARCH GRANT #2: "Definition of efficient federated learning techniques for network intrusion detection" The primary objective of network intrusion detection is to classify incoming traffic as benign or malicious in a timely and precise manner. The candidate will leverage the capabilities of next-generation networks to achieve this goal, improving the state of the art in the elaboration of traffic features using federated learning methods. In this way, it will be possible to efficiently combine information from all peripheral zones of the infrastructure to build robust and reliable machine learning models, enabling the possibility of performing open-set classification to detect classes of unknown inputs (such as zero-day attacks).
