Have you considered what Equity, Diversity and Inclusion really mean this #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek? 🌈 No, not the basic dictionary definitions. We're talking about creating environments in your school where every individual has fair access to opportunities, one where they feel valued and respected for their uniqueness and where they can fully contribute their talents and perspectives towards your shared goals. 🗣️ So, how can you support neurodivergent children and staff? How about hosting a neurodiversity-themed assembly, where people can show off their unique skills or talk about their experiences? Or ask students to research the accomplishments of neurodiverse people (perhaps current celebrities or entrepreneurs) for homework? If you're struggling to build equity, diversity and inclusion in your school, we've got a course that will help, too. Check out the Neurodiversity Celebration Week website for more information on how schools can get involved. 👇🏻 #neurodiversitycelebrationweek #neurodiversityacceptance #awareness #learning #education #educationsector

Justice is not the status quo. Creativity, empathy, and relational fitness are necessary to change that. We can’t have any of these if we are all “grinding” and exhausted. So wellness is foundational to equity, inclusion, belonging, mattering, accessibility, and decolonization. These are th things that transformational classrooms require 💯 #education #professionaldevelopment #keynotespeaker #keynote #educationconferencespeaker #conferencespeaker

Inclusivity: The Key to Unlocking Potential As educators, creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and supported is essential to a thriving society. It is a tough journey, but we have a responsibility to foster practices that truly embody the spirit of "NO child left behind". I'm excited to share that currently, I am attending a training session to gain further insights on policy adjustments and designing an inclusive curriculum. I'm grateful to have Dr. Fatima Dar as my mentor, whose diverse experience and expertise are invaluable. The session has already provided valuable insights on: - Ensuring policies accommodate different student challenges. - Promoting diverse perspectives in content. - Offering flexible participation options. - Providing timely and consistent feedback. Let's continue to strive towards creating inclusive spaces that leave no child behind. #inclusion #educators #nochildleftbehind #professionaldevelopment"

Imagine a space where everyone feels comfortable, valued, and free to share who they are. A place where you can express your beliefs and receive support for your unique needs. This is the essence of an inclusive space, and creating one is important for each of us working as educators in the field of education. Co-creating such spaces, whether in classrooms or workplaces, has always been a dilemma for me as an individual. How do we ensure everyone feels a sense of belonging and can be supported according to their needs and interests? Today's session helped me gain insights into how Neuro-Inclusive classroom spaces can be created to meet the needs of all children. The thought-provoking discussion today at the neurodiversity panel resonated with me, particularly in how we define: Understanding Neurodiversity: Brains come in all shapes and sizes! Neurodivergent individuals process information differently than neurotypical individuals. Neuro-Inclusive Classrooms: These classrooms embrace flexibility, allowing all students to connect, learn, and feel comfortable. School Culture Matters: It's crucial to understand individual needs and create a climate that celebrates differences. As, Kevin Hewitson NPQH BPhil, mentioned about four elements- creativity,Belonging, Choices with Consequences, and Fun! – are key to a truly inclusive space. The discussion gave me important insight to think about and dive deeper into the questions I keep asking myself. The most important question and ethical dilemma I always have is: who should be the decision-maker in a child's learning process and why? Also, how can we create, and most importantly, implement, a universal design or model that can cater to the individual needs of each student in their learning process? Please feel free to share your thoughts! P.S. Thanks to the amazing panelists for their insights! It was so thoughtful to hear from each one of you! Kevin Hewitson NPQH BPhil, Marius Frank, Mark Ellerby,🥊 Nic “Inclusion Revolution” Ponsford FRSA, Alexandria Hough Looking forward to such more discussions! #NuerodiversityCelebrationWeek # Inclusive Education

Let me give you one reason you might expect, and two reasons you might not expect as to why you should read the article "Celebrating Neurodiversity at Smith’s Hill High School" (written by Brodie Jones & Daniel Jones): 1. Neurodiversity Celebration Week presents an opportunity for you to reach out and tell every student that their mind, their experience, their ideas, their differences, their striving to overcome challenges, and their character, are all wholly valuable. 2. Neurodiversity Celebration Week is an important step towards helping students, teachers, and parents all better understand that along with the challenges that neurodivergent learners experience and may need support for, there are likely equally inherent strengths that present opportunities for the individuals’ success, confidence, and valuable contributions to the classroom, workplaces, communities and beyond. 3. If you do not take active steps towards fostering a school culture of valuing differences in thinking, processing, and learning, the risk of underachievement and disengagement increases; including for students who are gifted, or twice-exceptional. Neurodiversity Celebration Week presents an opportunity to shift perceptions of neurodivergent people to more of a strengths-based view and to cultivate a school culture that values ‘difference’. The full article, "Celebrating Neurodiversity at Smith’s Hill High School", can be found in Scan Volume 43, No. 2, pages 28-34; or click on the following link to download an accessible copy: https://lnkd.in/gudk2UmQ Special thanks to the Scan Editorial Team including Therese Kenny and Dr Di Laycock for editing and great support.
