Delighted to have been part of an inaugural tripartite meeting today led by Angela Rayner and Jonathan Reynolds on the ‘Make work pay’ (formerly the New Deal for Working People) agenda, discussing the wide range of proposed changes to employment policy and regulations. It was a good start with positive tone and intent from all sides - unions and employer bodies - but recognition also of real need for consultation, understanding unintended consequences, amount of potential change and working through many details. Ongoing consultation is promised and we will engage on behalf of our profession (and engage with our profession) who will be at the centre of much of this. Will be watching carefully for what may come under existing legislation, what primary legislation may be enacted through the proposed Employment Rights Bill and what may follow as secondary legislation where more time and consultation will be possible. And it’s not all going to be about law and compliance - we need to focus on the intended outcomes and be clear on the problems we are trying to solve.
