2024 Nineteenth Annual Dialog on Sustainability: "Ecosystem Restoration" Saturday, July 27, 2024 A FREE virtual webinar via ZOOM Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas The Consortium for Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability (CESAS) at Kansas State University and its partners will host the Nineteenth Annual Dialog on Sustainability on “Ecosystem Restoration - The Use of Biochar”. This dialog will focus on ecosystem restoration with an emphasis on the use of biochar for ecosystem restoration to improve soil quality and improve carbon sequestration and productive value of brownfields. This is the United Nations decade on ecosystem restoration because of the global need to improve soil health and the production of food and other products using vegetation. Carbon sequestration is very important in the efforts to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Ecosystem restoration of Native American lands and lands impacted by military operations will be included. Individuals, communities, organizations, environmental professionals, faculty, students, land owners, community leaders, and members of environmental organizations. are invited to participate. Really important report at this point in time when voters in Western countries are questioning the cost of green action. In parallel, some less visionary people in developing countries say they will industrialise at any cost and when rich, they will clean up their environment. Luckily there are many visionary people and those who live close to the natural world know that common sense means protecting your natural capital. #Opinion. "Why tear down the voluntary carbon market? We’d have to build something nearly identical to appeal to the corporate world. If our businesses are to exist in ten to 15 years, corporate leaders must not be dissuaded. The time has come to confront criticism and boldly support forest protection. It’s time to act boldly. It’s time to act now," says Daniel Schneiders, Director of the Climate Program at Bayer. ❗ In this new article, Schneiders warns that without substantial investment in conservation and restoration today, the consequences will be dire for most companies within the next decade or so. To effectively combat deforestation by 2030, an annual investment of at least $460 billion is necessary, yet the current allocation to forest preservation stands at a mere $2.3 billion per year. Recognizing that government funds alone cannot bridge this gap, Schneiders argues that large corporations are well-positioned to mobilize capital and contribute to trustworthy conservation markets.
